Introductionভূমিকা

Twelve years of school taught us that an English sentence is either correct or wrong, and that a wrong one gets a red line through it. So in the speaking room a Bangladeshi candidate says four words, hears a mistake, stops, and starts the sentence again — sometimes three times. That habit, which feels like carefulness, is the single largest reason our Fluency band sits at 6. The examiner is not counting errors here. He is listening for whether the talk keeps moving.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Fluency is keeping going at a natural speed without stopping to hunt for words. Coherence is the order of your ideas — whether one thought leads to the next. Neither means speaking fast, and neither is scored on accuracy: grammar has its own separate criterion, so a fluent answer with a few mistakes beats a correct answer delivered in pieces.

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

**প্রথম নিয়ম: শুরু করা বাক্য শেষ করুন।** ভুল হয়ে গেলে হয়ে গেছে — এগিয়ে যান। ব্যাকরণের নম্বর আলাদা মানদণ্ডে, আর সেখানে একটা ভুলে যতটা যায়, বারবার থেমে গিয়ে Fluency-তে তার চেয়ে বেশি যায়। নিজেকে শোধরাতেই যদি হয়, তবে একবারই, সাথে সাথে, ছোট করে (“…they was — they were very helpful”), তারপর আর ফিরে তাকাবেন না। আর যে শব্দটা মনে আসছে না, সেটার পেছনে ছুটবেন না — ঘুরিয়ে বলুন: “I don't know the exact word, but it's the person who repairs shoes.” এই ঘুরিয়ে বলার ক্ষমতাটাই আসলে দক্ষতা, দুর্বলতা নয়। **তৃতীয় নিয়ম: উত্তর বাড়ান, একটা ছাঁচ ধরে।** এক শব্দের উত্তর মানে নিজের হাতে সুযোগ ফেলে দেওয়া। সহজ ছাঁচ — **উত্তর, কারণ, উদাহরণ**: “Do you like cooking?” → “Not really. I find it takes too long after a full day — usually I just reheat whatever my mother has made and eat while checking my phone.” / “Let me think for a second.” / “I've never really thought about that, but…” / “Well, it depends.”

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • That's a good question. I'd say my favourite hobby is cricket, mainly because it keeps me active.ভালো প্রশ্ন। আমি বলব আমার প্রিয় শখ ক্রিকেট, মূলত কারণ এটি আমাকে সক্রিয় রাখে।
  • Well, let me think for a second — I haven't been asked that before.আচ্ছা, একটু ভাবতে দিন — আগে আমাকে এটা কেউ জিজ্ঞেস করেনি।
  • I enjoy reading, and on top of that, it helps me relax after a long day.আমি পড়তে ভালোবাসি, আর তার উপরে এটি দীর্ঘ দিনের পর আমাকে বিশ্রাম দেয়।
  • For example, last weekend I visited my grandparents in the village, which I really enjoyed.যেমন, গত সপ্তাহান্তে আমি গ্রামে আমার দাদা-দাদির কাছে গিয়েছিলাম, যা আমার খুব ভালো লেগেছিল।
  • To be honest, I'm not sure, but I suppose it depends on the situation.সত্যি বলতে, আমি নিশ্চিত নই, তবে মনে হয় এটা পরিস্থিতির উপর নির্ভর করে।
  • I used to dislike English, however, now I speak it every day, so my confidence has grown.আগে আমি ইংরেজি অপছন্দ করতাম, তবে এখন প্রতিদিন এটি বলি, তাই আমার আত্মবিশ্বাস বেড়েছে।
  • What I mean is, I prefer working in a team rather than on my own.আমি যা বলতে চাইছি তা হলো, আমি একা কাজ করার চেয়ে দলে কাজ করতে পছন্দ করি।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Yes. (full stop, silence)

Yes, I do — I especially like it in the evening because it's quieter then.

One-word answers hurt fluency; always add a reason, example or detail to extend your answer.

  • Long silent pause while translating the sentence from Bangla in your head.

Use a filler like 'Well, let me see...' while you think, then keep speaking.

Silent translation creates long pauses; fillers keep the flow natural while you plan.

  • I like it. It is good. It is nice. It is fun.

I like it because it's relaxing, and it also gives me time to think.

A string of short, disconnected sentences lowers coherence; link ideas with because, and, so.

  • Sorry, sorry, let me start again... (repeating and self-correcting constantly)

Keep going even after a small slip — a smooth flow matters more than perfection.

Constantly restarting breaks your fluency; minor mistakes cost far less than frequent hesitation.

Tipsটিপস

  • Practise thinking directly in English so you stop translating from Bangla mid-sentence. সরাসরি ইংরেজিতে ভাবার অভ্যাস করুন যাতে বাক্যের মাঝে বাংলা থেকে অনুবাদ করতে না হয়।
  • Learn a few natural fillers ('That's interesting', 'Let me think') to buy time instead of falling silent. কয়েকটি স্বাভাবিক filler ('That's interesting', 'Let me think') শিখুন, চুপ হয়ে যাওয়ার বদলে সময় নিতে।
  • Extend every answer with the P-R-E pattern: Point, Reason, Example. প্রতিটি উত্তর P-R-E ধারায় বাড়ান: Point (মূল কথা), Reason (কারণ), Example (উদাহরণ)।
  • Record yourself speaking for two minutes daily and count your long pauses — aim to reduce them each week. প্রতিদিন দুই মিনিট নিজের কথা রেকর্ড করে বড় pause গুলো গুনুন — প্রতি সপ্তাহে তা কমানোর চেষ্টা করুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

Does speaking faster improve my IELTS fluency score?

No. Speaking too fast often causes mistakes and unclear pronunciation. Fluency means a smooth, natural flow with few long pauses, so speak at a comfortable, steady pace.

Is it bad to pause during the IELTS speaking test?

Short, natural pauses are fine and normal. The problem is long silent pauses while you search for words. Use fillers like 'let me think' to stay fluent while you plan what to say.

How can I stop translating from Bangla when I speak English?

Practise thinking in English every day: describe what you see aloud, keep an English-only diary, and speak for two minutes without notes. Over time your brain forms English sentences directly.
