Computer-delivered IELTS means the Listening, Reading and Writing papers are taken on a computer at the test centre, with the Speaking test still conducted face to face by an examiner. Paper-based IELTS means those three papers are answered by hand on question papers and answer sheets, with the same Speaking test.

প্রথমে যা এক, সেটা পরিষ্কার করে নেওয়া যাক, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল ধারণা। প্রশ্নের ধরন এক, কঠিনতা এক, নম্বর দেওয়ার নিয়ম এক, আর Speaking দুটিতেই মানুষ পরীক্ষকের সাথে — “কম্পিউটারে দিলে রোবটের সাথে কথা বলতে হয়” কথাটি ভুল। এবার পার্থক্যগুলো। Listening: কাগজে দিলে রেকর্ডিং শেষ হওয়ার পর উত্তরপত্রে উত্তর তুলে লেখার জন্য বাড়তি দশ মিনিট পাওয়া যায়; কম্পিউটারে দিলে সেই তোলার কাজটাই নেই, কারণ আপনি শোনার সময়েই সরাসরি টাইপ করছেন, শেষে অল্প কিছু সময় পান শুধু দেখে নেওয়ার জন্য। যাঁর হাতের লেখা ধীর বা যিনি তুলতে গিয়ে ভুল করেন, তাঁর জন্য কম্পিউটার সুবিধাজনক; যিনি ওই দশ মিনিটে বানান ঠিক করে নিতে ভালোবাসেন, তাঁর জন্য কাগজ। Reading: দুই ধরনেই ৬০ মিনিট, ৪০টি প্রশ্ন, আর কোনো ধরনেই উত্তর তোলার বাড়তি সময় নেই। কম্পিউটারে passage আর প্রশ্ন পাশাপাশি পর্দায় থাকে, লাইন দাগানো ও নোট নেওয়ার সুবিধা থাকে; কাগজে আপনি হাতে দাগাতে পারেন, কিন্তু পাতা ওল্টাতে হয়। যিনি পর্দায় লম্বা লেখা পড়লে ক্লান্ত হন, তাঁর জন্য কাগজ ভালো — এটা সত্যিই ব্যক্তিভেদে আলাদা, তাই একটি করে নমুনা পরীক্ষা দুই ভাবে দিয়ে দেখাই সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ। Writing: কম্পিউটারে শব্দসংখ্যা পর্দাতেই দেখা যায়, বাক্য কেটে নতুন করে সাজানো সহজ, আর হাতের লেখা পড়া না যাওয়ার ঝুঁকি নেই — কাগজে পরীক্ষক যা পড়তে পারেন না, তাতে নম্বর দিতেও পারেন না। তবে কম্পিউটারে টাইপিং গতি একটা আসল বিষয়: ইংরেজি কীবোর্ডে যিনি দুই আঙুলে টাইপ করেন, তাঁর ৪০ মিনিটের Task 2 আসলে ৩০ মিনিটের হয়ে যায়। ফলাফল কম্পিউটারে দিলে অনেক দ্রুত আসে, আর তারিখও বেশি পাওয়া যায় — কোন কেন্দ্রে কোনটি চালু আছে, সেটি নিজের কেন্দ্র থেকে জেনে নেবেন। সিদ্ধান্তের সহজ নিয়ম: আপনি কি ইংরেজি কীবোর্ডে স্বচ্ছন্দে টাইপ করেন? করলে কম্পিউটার, না করলে কাগজ। বাকি সব পার্থক্য এর চেয়ে ছোট।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Believing the computer test means talking to a machine in Speaking.
Speaking is with a human examiner in both versions.
The name 'computer-delivered' describes the three written papers only. Many candidates avoid the computer test for a reason that does not exist.
Assuming the computer version is scored more leniently.
Both versions use the same band descriptors and the same scale.
The delivery method changes nothing about marking. Choosing a version to chase an easier score is choosing for the wrong reason.
Booking the computer test without ever typing an essay in English.
Type at least five full practice essays before you book.
Bangla typists usually work in a phonetic Bangla layout, so English typing speed can be much slower than handwriting — and slow typing eats the 40 minutes Task 2 needs.
On paper, writing Reading answers only on the question paper.
Write Reading answers on the answer sheet as you go.
Reading has no transfer time in either version, so answers left on the question paper at the sixty-minute mark are simply lost.
Writing an untidy Task 2 by hand because the ideas are good.
Keep handwriting legible even when rushing.
An examiner cannot award marks for a word they cannot read. This is a risk that only exists on the paper test, and it is entirely within your control.

Is computer-based IELTS easier than paper-based?
Neither is easier. The content, the question types and the marking are identical. The right choice depends on you — mainly on whether you type English comfortably and whether reading long texts on a screen tires you.
How much faster are computer-delivered results?
Computer-delivered results are released considerably sooner than paper results, which take about two weeks. The exact number of days depends on the test centre, so confirm it with yours before booking if a deadline is close.
Do universities accept both versions equally?
Yes. Both produce the same Test Report Form with the same band scores, and institutions do not distinguish between them. Always check the individual institution's IELTS requirements, but the delivery mode is not one of them.
Can I switch between versions if I retake the test?
Yes. Each booking is separate, so you can take the paper test once and the computer test the next time. If your first attempt showed that the format itself cost you time, switching is a sensible thing to try.
