IELTS Writing Task 2 always asks for a 250-word essay, but the question can come in different types. If you recognise the type first, you know exactly what structure to use — which saves time and directly raises your Task Response score.

There are five common Task 2 types: opinion (agree or disagree), discussion (discuss both views and give your opinion), advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution (or causes and solutions), and two-part questions. Each type asks you to do a specific job, and your essay must answer every part of the question.

প্রথমে প্রশ্ন পড়ে ধরন চিনুন — এটাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ধাপ। ১) Opinion: 'To what extent do you agree or disagree?' — নিজের একটি স্পষ্ট মত ঠিক করে পুরো প্রবন্ধে সেটি ধরে রাখুন। ২) Discussion: 'Discuss both views and give your own opinion.' — এক paragraph এক পক্ষ, আরেক paragraph অন্য পক্ষ, আর নিজের মত অবশ্যই দিন। ৩) Advantages/Disadvantages: সুবিধা ও অসুবিধা দুটোই লিখুন। ৪) Problem/Solution: সমস্যা (বা কারণ) ও সমাধান আলাদা paragraph-এ লিখুন। ৫) Two-part: দুটি প্রশ্নেরই উত্তর দিন। সব ধরনেই গঠন একই কাঠামোয়: introduction (প্রশ্ন paraphrase + thesis) → দুটি body paragraph (প্রতিটিতে একটি মূল ভাবনা + ব্যাখ্যা + উদাহরণ) → conclusion (মূল বক্তব্যের সারসংক্ষেপ)। কমপক্ষে ২৫০ শব্দ, ৪০ মিনিট।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Writing about both sides equally when the question says 'do you agree or disagree'.
Take one clear position and defend it throughout the whole essay.
An opinion essay needs a consistent stance; sitting on the fence lowers your Task Response score.
Discussing both views but forgetting to give your own opinion.
In a discussion essay, discuss both views AND state your own opinion clearly.
'Discuss both views and give your own opinion' has two parts; missing one means the task is not fully answered.
Only writing about advantages when the question asks for advantages and disadvantages.
Cover both advantages and disadvantages, giving each a body paragraph.
Answering only half the question caps your band score, however good the English is.
Writing 180 words to save time.
Write at least 250 words in Task 2.
Answers under 250 words are penalised, and short essays rarely develop ideas fully.

How many IELTS essay types are there?
There are five common types in Writing Task 2: opinion (agree/disagree), discussion, advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution, and two-part questions. Recognising the type tells you which structure to use.
Do I always have to give my own opinion in Task 2?
Almost always, but check the wording. Opinion and discussion questions clearly ask for your view. Some advantages/disadvantages and problem/solution questions do not, so give an opinion only if the task asks for one.
How long should I spend on IELTS Writing Task 2?
About 40 minutes of the 60-minute Writing test. Spend roughly 5 minutes planning, 30 minutes writing at least 250 words, and 5 minutes checking grammar and spelling.
