A line graph is the most common visual in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. It usually shows how something changes over time, so your job is to report the main trends clearly in about 150 words — not to explain why they happen.

In Task 1 you write a factual report of the data. A strong answer has four parts: an introduction that paraphrases the question, a one- or two-sentence overview of the biggest trends, and two body paragraphs that group and compare the key figures with accurate numbers.

প্রথমে প্রশ্নের বাক্যটি হুবহু না লিখে নিজের ভাষায় paraphrase করুন (line graph → line graph illustrates/shows)। এরপর Overview: চোখে সবচেয়ে বড় যে পরিবর্তন পড়ে সেটি লিখুন — কোনটা সবচেয়ে বেশি বেড়েছে, কোনটা কমেছে, সর্বোচ্চ ও সর্বনিম্ন কোথায়। Overview-তে কোনো সংখ্যা না দিলেও চলে। তারপর দুটি body paragraph-এ সংখ্যা ও তারিখসহ বিস্তারিত লিখুন। সময়ের কথা বলতে past tense (increased, fell) আর ভবিষ্যতের projection থাকলে 'is expected to' ব্যবহার করুন। trend বোঝাতে verb + adverb (rose sharply) বা adjective + noun (a sharp rise) — দুই গঠনই শিখে রাখুন।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
The graph shows the number of tourists in 2019, 2020 and 2021 was 5, 6 and 7 million.
The number of tourists rose steadily from 5 million in 2019 to 7 million in 2021.
Do not list every number separately; describe the trend and support it with only the most important figures.
Sales increased because people had more money.
Sales increased by 20% over the period.
Task 1 is a data report, not an essay — never invent reasons or opinions about why the data changed.

The subject 'line graph' is singular, so the verb needs -s: shows, illustrates, presents.

A completed past year needs the past tense (were, rose, fell), not the present.

- Always include one clear overview sentence with no specific numbers — examiners reward a strong overview highly. — সংখ্যা ছাড়া একটি স্পষ্ট overview বাক্য অবশ্যই লিখুন — examiner এতে বেশি নম্বর দেন।
- Vary how you describe change: pair a verb with an adverb (rose sharply) and a noun with an adjective (a sharp rise). — পরিবর্তন লিখতে বৈচিত্র্য আনুন: verb + adverb (rose sharply) এবং noun + adjective (a sharp rise) দুইভাবেই লিখুন।
- Group similar lines together instead of describing each line one after another — it shows comparison skill. — প্রতিটি line আলাদাভাবে না লিখে একই ধরনের line গুলো দল করে লিখুন — এতে তুলনার দক্ষতা বোঝা যায়।
- Spend two minutes planning and one minute checking spelling, tenses and the -s on singular verbs. — দুই মিনিট পরিকল্পনায় আর এক মিনিট বানান, tense ও singular verb-এর -s যাচাইয়ে ব্যয় করুন।

Hint: A finished past period needs the past tense: increased.

Hint: shows → illustrates; amount eaten → how much was consumed; from...to → between...and.

How long should my IELTS line graph answer be?
Write at least 150 words. Aim for about 160–190 words in four parts (introduction, overview, two body paragraphs) and finish within 20 minutes so you have time for Task 2.
Do I need to include numbers from the line graph?
Yes, but selectively. Put no numbers in the overview, then support your body paragraphs with the most important figures — peaks, lows, start and end points — rather than every value.
Should I give reasons for the trends in the line graph?
No. Task 1 is a factual report. Describe what the data shows and compare figures; never guess why the numbers changed or add your own opinion.
