Your IELTS speaking score is not a single guess by the examiner — it comes from four equally weighted criteria. Knowing exactly what each one measures lets you stop wasting effort and target the skills that actually raise your band.

The band descriptors are four scoring criteria, each worth 25%: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource (vocabulary), Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Your final band is the average of these four scores.

চারটি মানদণ্ড, প্রতিটি ২৫%: (১) Fluency and Coherence — কত সহজে, থামা কমিয়ে ও যুক্তির ক্রম ঠিক রেখে কথা বলেন; long pause ও অতিরিক্ত “um, um” নম্বর কমায়। (২) Lexical Resource — শব্দভাণ্ডারের ব্যাপ্তি, idiom, collocation এবং paraphrase করার ক্ষমতা। (৩) Grammatical Range and Accuracy — simple ও complex দুই ধরনের বাক্য কতটা সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করেন। (৪) Pronunciation — কতটা পরিষ্কার বোঝা যায়, শব্দের stress ও intonation; নিখুঁত British/American accent লাগে না, শুধু স্পষ্টতা লাগে। চূড়ান্ত স্কোর চারটির গড়, তাই একটিতে দুর্বল হলে বাকিগুলো টেনে ধরবে। band 7-এর জন্য দরকার সাবলীলতা, কিছু কম-প্রচলিত শব্দ, নিয়মিত complex বাক্য এবং স্পষ্ট উচ্চারণ।

- Coherence linker: 'On the one hand it saves money, whereas on the other hand it takes longer.'Coherence linker: 'On the one hand... whereas on the other hand...' — যুক্তি সংযোগকারী শব্দ।
- Paraphrasing: 'When I say cheap, I mean it doesn't cost much at all.'Paraphrase: 'When I say cheap, I mean...' — একই ভাব ভিন্নভাবে বলা।
- Pronunciation: stressing key words — 'It was ABSOLUTELY the best decision I ever made.'Pronunciation: মূল শব্দে জোর — 'ABSOLUTELY the best decision' — stress ও intonation।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Giving one-word answers: 'Yes.' 'No.' 'I like it.'
Extend every answer with a reason and an example.
Short answers give the examiner no language to assess, capping Fluency and Coherence.
Memorising a fixed speech and reciting it.
Speak naturally and answer the exact question asked.
Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, which are marked down heavily.
Trying to copy a perfect British or American accent.
Focus on being clear and easy to understand.
Pronunciation rewards clarity, stress and intonation, not a particular accent.
Only using simple sentences to stay safe.
Mix simple sentences with complex ones like conditionals and relative clauses.
Grammatical Range needs a variety of structures; playing safe caps you around band 6.

- Always extend answers with 'because', 'for example' or 'such as' — reasons and examples show fluency. — সবসময় 'because', 'for example', 'such as' দিয়ে উত্তর বাড়ান — কারণ ও উদাহরণ সাবলীলতা দেখায়।

Are the four speaking criteria weighted equally?
Yes. Each of the four criteria is worth 25%, and your final band is the average, so a weakness in one area pulls the whole score down.
Do I need a native accent to get a high pronunciation score?
No. You are marked on how clear and understandable you are, using stress and intonation well. A Bangladeshi accent is perfectly fine if you are easy to follow.
What is the biggest difference between band 6 and band 7 speaking?
Band 7 speakers keep going with less hesitation, use some less common vocabulary, produce accurate complex grammar regularly, and are consistently clear.
