IELTS General Training Task 1: Letter Writing
IELTS General Training Task 1:
Introduction
In IELTS General Training, Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter of at least 150 words. The prompt gives a situation and three bullet points you must cover, and your first decision is the tone: formal, semi-formal or informal.
Definition
A Task 1 letter is a short, purposeful message to a specific reader — an official, a manager, a landlord or a friend. You must open and close correctly, cover all three bullet points, and keep one consistent tone throughout.
Bangla Explanation
“Yours sincerely,”। “Best wishes,”। formal চিঠিতে contraction (I'm, can't) এড়িয়ে চলুন; informal-এ সেগুলো ঠিক আছে।

How long should an IELTS General Training letter be?
At least 150 words, written in about 20 minutes. Going well below 150 words is penalised, so keep an eye on length.
How do I know if the letter should be formal or informal?
Look at the reader. A stranger or an official means formal; someone named that you know means semi-formal; a friend or family member means informal.
Do I need a name and address at the top?
No. IELTS does not require addresses or dates. Begin with the greeting, cover the three points, and end with the correct sign-off.
