IELTS Reading: True/False/Not Given Strategy
IELTS Reading: True/False/Not Given কৌশল
Introduction
True/False/Not Given is one of the trickiest IELTS Reading question types. Many learners lose marks not because their English is weak, but because they confuse 'False' with 'Not Given'. A clear method fixes that.
True/False/Not Given IELTS Reading-এর সবচেয়ে কঠিন প্রশ্নগুলোর একটি।
Definition
These questions give you statements and ask whether each one agrees with the passage. Answer 'True' if the passage clearly states the same idea, 'False' if the passage clearly states the opposite, and 'Not Given' if the passage does not mention the information at all — you cannot tell from the text whether it is true or false.
Bangla Explanation
all, always, only, never — এসব চরম শব্দে সতর্ক থাকুন; passage আরও নরম কিছু বললে statement False হতে পারে।

Common Mistakes
Marking a statement 'False' just because you cannot find the information in the passage.
If the information is simply absent, the answer is 'Not Given', not 'False'.
'False' needs the passage to state the opposite; missing information is always 'Not Given'.
Using your own general knowledge to decide the answer.
Answer only from what the passage actually says.
The test checks reading, not outside knowledge; a true real-world fact can still be 'Not Given'.
Matching the same words and assuming the answer is 'True'.
Compare the meaning; the passage may use the same words but express the opposite idea.
Word-matching is a common trap; examiners paraphrase and reverse ideas to test understanding.
Writing 'T', 'F' and 'NG' or leaving a question blank.
Write the full words the instructions ask for, and answer every question.
Wrong formats can be marked incorrect, and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a blank.
Tips
- Fix the rule in your mind: False = the text says the opposite; Not Given = the text does not mention it. — নিয়মটি মনে গেঁথে নিন: False = text উল্টো বলে; Not Given = text উল্লেখই করে না।
- Underline keywords in each statement, then scan the passage in order — answers usually follow the text's sequence.
- Be suspicious of extreme words like all, always, only and never; the passage often states something softer. — all, always, only, never-এর মতো চরম শব্দে সন্দেহ রাখুন; passage প্রায়ই এর চেয়ে নরম কিছু বলে।
- Never leave a blank — there is no negative marking, so always commit to True, False or Not Given.

What is the difference between False and Not Given in IELTS Reading?
False means the passage clearly states the opposite of the statement. Not Given means the passage does not mention the information at all, so you cannot tell whether it is true or false from the text.
Can I use my own knowledge to answer True/False/Not Given?
No. You must answer only from the passage. A statement that is true in the real world can still be 'Not Given' if the passage does not mention it, so ignore outside knowledge completely.
Should I guess if I am unsure of a True/False/Not Given answer?
Yes. There is no negative marking in IELTS Reading, so never leave a blank. Eliminate what you can, then commit to True, False or Not Given — a guess has a real chance of being right.
