Millions of Bangladeshis understand Hindi without ever having studied it — no textbook, no teacher, no grammar exercise, just years of television. The English verb for exactly that is “pick up”: to learn a language without trying. It is worth noticing, because it is proof that the method works, and the same method is available in English if you give it the same number of hours.

“Pick”-এর phrasal verb ঢাকে কাউকে তুলে নেওয়া (pick up), না পড়েই শিখে ফেলা (pick up), বেছে নেওয়া (pick out), কাউকে জ্বালাতন করা (pick on), না-বলা কিছু টের পাওয়া (pick up on) আর অরুচিতে খুঁটে খুঁটে খাওয়া (pick at)।

অর্থগুলো: “pick somebody up” = গাড়িতে তুলে নেওয়া; “pick something up” = কুড়িয়ে নেওয়া, আবার ধীরে ধীরে শিখে ফেলা (“She picked up Spanish in Madrid”); “pick out” = অনেকের মধ্য থেকে বেছে নেওয়া; “pick on somebody” = কাউকে বেছে নিয়ে জ্বালাতন করা বা দোষ ধরা; “pick up on something” = কেউ বলেনি এমন কিছু বুঝে ফেলা; “pick at food” = অল্প অল্প খুঁটে খাওয়া; “pick apart” = খুঁটিয়ে সমালোচনা করা; “pick up speed” = গতি বাড়ানো; “business is picking up” = ব্যবসা চাঙা হয়ে উঠছে। ফাঁদগুলো object-এর জায়গায় আর preposition-এ। Pick up আর pick out separable, তাই সাধারণ noun দুই জায়গাতেই বসতে পারে — “pick up my cousin” বা “pick my cousin up” — কিন্তু সর্বনাম হলে মাঝখানেই বসবে: “I'll pick you up at six” ✓, “pick up you” ✗। আর object যদি লম্বা হয়, তখন সেটা পরে বসাই স্বাভাবিক: “She picked up the new software quickly” — বাক্যের ভেতরে লম্বা object আর ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ একসাথে ঢোকালে বাক্যটা বেঁকে যায়। “Pick on” আর “pick up on” — দুটোই inseparable, আর দুটোর অর্থ পুরো আলাদা: “Stop picking on me” মানে আমাকে নিয়ে খোঁচাখুঁচি বন্ধ করো, আর “I picked up on his nervousness” মানে ওর অস্বস্তিটা আমি টের পেয়েছিলাম। আর শেখার দিক থেকে এই পাতার সবচেয়ে দামি কথাটা ওই দ্বিতীয় অর্থেই: ভাষা pick up করা যায়। হিন্দি যেভাবে শিখেছেন, ইংরেজিও সেভাবেই শেখা সম্ভব — শর্ত একটাই, ইনপুটটা দিতে হবে। যা যা কাজে দেয়: ইংরেজি সাবটাইটেল দিয়ে ইংরেজি অনুষ্ঠান দেখা (বাংলা সাবটাইটেল নয়, তাতে চোখ বাংলাটাই পড়ে), ফোনের ভাষা ইংরেজি করে রাখা, দিনে পনেরো মিনিট ইংরেজি পডকাস্ট শোনা, আর যে গানটা পছন্দ সেটার lyrics পড়ে ফেলা। এতে ব্যাকরণ শেখা হয় না, কিন্তু কানটা তৈরি হয়ে যায় — আর কান তৈরি হলে ব্যাকরণ শেখা কয়েক গুণ সহজ হয়। বইয়ের পড়া আর pick up করা — দুটো একে অন্যের বিকল্প নয়, দুটো একসাথে চললেই সবচেয়ে দ্রুত এগোনো যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

I will pick up you at the station.
I will pick you up at the station.
With a pronoun object (you, him, her), it must go between the verb and particle: pick you up.
Stop picking me.
Stop picking on me.
To mean bullying or teasing, you need the particle "on": pick on someone.
She picked up quickly the new software.
She picked up the new software quickly.
Don't split the phrasal verb with an adverb; keep "pick up" together and put "quickly" after the object.
I noticed on his nervousness.
I picked up on his nervousness.
To mean notice a subtle signal, the fixed form is "pick up on" — the verb "pick" is part of it.
