Introductionভূমিকা

What we call load-shedding, the rest of the English-speaking world calls a power cut or a blackout — and the verb for it is “cut off”: the electricity was cut off. Load-shedding is a genuine South Asian coinage, understood here and nowhere else, so it is worth having the international phrase ready. Cut is like that all the way through: small, everyday, and full of particles that decide whether you are reducing something, removing it, or interrupting someone.

“Cut” phrasal verbs divide into three ideas: reducing gradually (cut down on, cut back on), removing completely (cut out, cut off) and interrupting (cut in). The particle decides which, and two of them insist on a second preposition.

“Cut”-এর phrasal verb তিনটে ধারণায় ভাগ হয়: ধীরে ধীরে কমানো (cut down on, cut back on), পুরোপুরি বাদ দেওয়া (cut out, cut off) আর মাঝপথে থামিয়ে দেওয়া (cut in)। কোনটা হবে সেটা ঠিক করে particle, আর এদের দুটো আবার দ্বিতীয় একটা preposition-ও দাবি করে।

অর্থগুলো: “cut down on something” = পরিমাণ কমানো (একেবারে বাদ নয়); “cut back on something” = খরচ বা ব্যবহার কমিয়ে আনা; “cut out something” = একেবারে বাদ দেওয়া; “cut off” = সংযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন করা — বিদ্যুৎ, পানি, ফোনের লাইন; “cut in” = কথার মাঝে ঢুকে পড়া, বা গাড়ি চালানোর সময় হঠাৎ সামনে ঢুকে পড়া; “cut up” = টুকরো টুকরো করে কাটা; “cut through” = সংক্ষিপ্ত পথে পার হওয়া; “cut it fine” = এত অল্প সময় রাখা যে অল্পের জন্য ধরা পড়ে। ফাঁদগুলো ছোট শব্দে, আর এগুলোই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়। “Cut down ON sugar” — on বাদ দেওয়া যায় না যখন পিছনে জিনিসটার নাম আছে; শুধু “cut down” একা বসতে পারে (“I need to cut down”)। একই নিয়ম “cut back on”। কিন্তু “cut out” সরাসরি object নেয়: “She cut out fast food”, on লাগে না। আর “cut off” বিচ্ছিন্ন করার জন্য, কমানোর জন্য নয় — তাই বিদ্যুৎ cut off হয়, cut down হয় না। “Cut in” সাধারণত object নেয় না: “Don't cut in while I'm speaking” ✓, “Don't cut me in” ✗ (cut in-এর সাথে মানুষ বসাতে হলে বলুন “Don't cut me off”, অর্থাৎ আমার কথা থামিয়ে দিয়ো না)। আর মাত্রার তফাতটা মাথায় রাখুন, কারণ স্বাস্থ্য আর খরচ নিয়ে ইংরেজিতে কথা বলতে গেলে এই দুটোই লাগে। Cut down on মানে কমানো, বাদ দেওয়া নয় — ডাক্তার বলবেন “Cut down on salt and oil”, মানে কম খান, একেবারে ছাড়তে হবে না। Cut out মানে পুরোপুরি বাদ — “I've cut out sugar completely.” Cut back on মূলত খরচ আর ব্যবহারে — “We had to cut back on spending after Eid.” এই তিনটে আলাদা রাখতে পারলে নিজের অভ্যাস বা বাজেট নিয়ে ইংরেজিতে নিখুঁতভাবে বলা যায়, আর IELTS-এর স্বাস্থ্য বা পরিবেশ বিষয়ক প্রশ্নে এগুলোই সবচেয়ে কাজে লাগে: “Governments could cut down on plastic waste by taxing single-use bags.” আর মনে রাখবেন, phrasal verb গুলো কথ্য থেকে নিরপেক্ষ ভঙ্গির — আনুষ্ঠানিক রিপোর্টে বিকল্প শব্দও জানা থাকা ভালো: cut down on → reduce, cut out → eliminate, cut off → disconnect।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I want to cut down my screen time.

    I want to cut down on my screen time.

    When "cut down" means reduce a habit, we usually add the particle "on" before the thing: cut down on X.

  • The electricity was cut down yesterday.

    The electricity was cut off yesterday.

    For disconnecting a supply or line we use "cut off", not "cut down".

  • I will cut my smoking.

    I will cut out smoking.

    "Cut" alone does not mean stop a habit — use the particle: cut out smoking (a literal Bangla translation drops the particle).

  • Don't cut me in when I talk.

    Don't cut in when I talk.

    "Cut in" is intransitive here — you don't put an object between the verb and particle.

They overlap a lot. Both mean to reduce, but "cut back (on)" is used most for spending, budgets and resources, while "cut down (on)" is common for food, drink and habits.

No. "Cut off" also means to interrupt someone, to isolate a place (the village was cut off by floods), or to stop giving someone money or support.
