Introductionভূমিকা

“Never give up” is on the wall of half the coaching centres in this country, so give up is the one phrasal verb everybody here owns. The one almost nobody owns is “give in”, and it is the more useful of the two: give up is about effort — you stop trying — while give in is about pressure — someone pushed and you yielded. A person can give in without giving up, and that distinction is what makes the difference between the two sentences.

“Never give up” এই দেশের অর্ধেক কোচিং সেন্টারের দেয়ালে লেখা, তাই give up হলো সেই একটামাত্র phrasal verb যেটা এখানে সবার জানা। যেটা প্রায় কারোরই জানা নেই সেটা “give in”, আর দুটোর মধ্যে বেশি কাজের সেটাই: give up চেষ্টা নিয়ে — আপনি চেষ্টা করা বন্ধ করলেন; আর give in চাপ নিয়ে — কেউ চাপ দিল, আপনি নতি স্বীকার করলেন। একজন মানুষ give in করেও give up না করতে পারেন, আর এই তফাতটাই দুটো বাক্যকে আলাদা করে।

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

“Give” phrasal verbs are about releasing something: stopping an effort or a habit (give up), yielding to pressure (give in to), handing out (give out), handing back (give back), donating (give away) and emitting (give off).

“Give”-এর phrasal verb কোনো কিছু ছেড়ে দেওয়া নিয়ে: চেষ্টা বা অভ্যাস ছাড়া (give up), চাপের কাছে নতি স্বীকার (give in to), বিলি করা (give out), ফেরত দেওয়া (give back), দান করা বা ফাঁস করা (give away) আর ছড়ানো (give off)।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

অর্থগুলো: “give up” = চেষ্টা ছেড়ে দেওয়া, বা অভ্যাস ত্যাগ করা; “give in to something” = চাপের কাছে হার মানা; “give out” = বিলি করা, আবার ফুরিয়ে যাওয়া বা বিকল হওয়া (“The generator gave out”); “give back” = ফেরত দেওয়া; “give away” = বিনামূল্যে দিয়ে দেওয়া, আবার গোপন কথা ফাঁস করে দেওয়া; “give off” = গন্ধ, তাপ বা আলো ছড়ানো; “give in” (আলাদা অর্থে) = খাতা বা কাগজ জমা দেওয়া (ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে, আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে “hand in”); “give way” = ভেঙে পড়া, বা পথ ছেড়ে দেওয়া। ফাঁদগুলো তিনটে। এক, up আর in গুলিয়ে ফেলা: “She never gives up to pressure” নয় — চাপের কথা বলতে in লাগে, আর তার পরে to: “She never gives in to pressure.” দুই, সর্বনামের জায়গা: give up, give away, give back আর give out separable, তাই সর্বনাম মাঝখানে বসবেই — “Give it up” ✓, “give up it” ✗; “Give them away” ✓, “give away them” ✗। কিন্তু সাধারণ noun হলে দুই জায়গাতেই চলে: “give away the prizes” বা “give the prizes away”। তিন, off আর up গুলিয়ে ফেলা: গন্ধ বা তাপ ছড়ায় give off, give up নয় — “The flowers give off a sweet smell”, “This heater gives off a strange smell.” আর ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে দুটো কথা। প্রথমত, “give up” অভ্যাস ছাড়ার সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক শব্দ, আর এর পরে -ing রূপ বসে: give up smoking, give up eating out, give up trying — “give up to smoke” নয়। দ্বিতীয়ত, “give away” কেবল দান করা নয়, গোপন কথা ফাঁস করাও বোঝায়, আর এই দ্বিতীয় অর্থটা কথায় খুব চলে: “Don't give away the ending!” ছবি বা বইয়ের কাহিনি ফাঁস না করতে বলার এটাই চলতি ইংরেজি, আর আজকাল এর একটা এক-শব্দের রূপও আছে — “no spoilers”। শেষে ভঙ্গির কথা: phrasal verb গুলো কথ্য থেকে নিরপেক্ষ; আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় বিকল্প জানা থাকা ভালো — give up → quit বা abandon; give in → yield বা concede; give out → distribute; give off → emit; give back → return। রিপোর্টে এক-শব্দের verb, কথায় phrasal verb — এই ভাগটাই ইংরেজিকে দুই জায়গাতেই ঠিক শোনায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • She never gives up to pressure.

She never gives in to pressure.

To yield to pressure you use 'give in to'. 'Give up' means to quit an activity, not to surrender to someone.

  • Give up it — it is a bad habit.

Give it up — it is a bad habit.

'Give up' is separable, so a pronoun object must go in the middle: give it up.

  • The flowers give up a sweet smell.

The flowers give off a sweet smell.

To emit heat, light or smell, the correct particle is 'off', not 'up'.

Tipsটিপস

  • 'Give up', 'give away', 'give back' and 'give out' are separable — 'give away the prizes' or 'give the prizes away', and with a pronoun it must split: 'give them away'. 'Give up', 'give away', 'give back', 'give out' separable — 'give away the prizes' বা 'give the prizes away', আর pronoun হলে ভাঙতেই হবে: 'give them away'।
  • 'Give in' is inseparable and usually followed by 'to' + the thing you surrender to: 'give in to temptation'. 'Give in' inseparable এবং সাধারণত 'to' + যার কাছে হার মানছেন তা বসে: 'give in to temptation'।
  • Remember 'give up' by its two everyday senses — quitting a habit (give up sugar) and stopping an effort (never give up). Both mean to stop. 'Give up'-এর দুটি প্রতিদিনের অর্থ দিয়ে মনে রাখুন — অভ্যাস ছাড়া (give up sugar) আর চেষ্টা থামানো (never give up)। দুটোরই মানে থেমে যাওয়া।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

What is the difference between 'give up' and 'give in'?

'Give up' means to quit or stop doing something (he gave up smoking; don't give up). 'Give in' means to surrender or yield to pressure, usually followed by 'to' (she gave in to her children's demands). One is about stopping an activity, the other about losing a struggle.

Does 'give away' only mean to donate?

No. It commonly means to give something for free (they gave away T-shirts), but it also means to reveal a secret unintentionally (his shaking hands gave away his nervousness; don't give away the ending).

What does 'give out' mean?

It has two main senses: to distribute something (the volunteers gave out food) and to stop working or run out (my phone battery gave out; her strength gave out). Context makes the meaning clear.
