Phrasal Verbs with Make
Phrasal Verbs with Make (Make দিয়ে গঠিত Phrasal Verb)
Introductionভূমিকা
One phrasal verb, four unrelated meanings. “Make up” can mean to invent a story, to become friends again after a quarrel, to compensate for something lost, and to apply cosmetics. English does not mark which is which; the sentence around it does all the work. That is uncomfortable if you learned vocabulary as a list of equals signs, and it is exactly why phrasal verbs have to be learned inside sentences.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
“Make” phrasal verbs cover inventing and reconciling (make up), compensating (make up for), perceiving with difficulty (make out), heading somewhere (make for), forming an opinion (make of), escaping with something (make off with) and managing with what you have (make do with).
“Make”-এর phrasal verb ঢাকে বানানো ও মিলে যাওয়া (make up), ক্ষতি পোষানো (make up for), কষ্টে বোঝা বা দেখা (make out), কোনো দিকে ছোটা (make for), মতামত তৈরি করা (make of), নিয়ে পালানো (make off with) আর যা আছে তা দিয়েই চালিয়ে নেওয়া (make do with)।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
অর্থগুলো: “make up” = বানিয়ে বলা, আবার ঝগড়ার পর মিটমাট করা; “make up for something” = ক্ষতি বা ঘাটতি পুষিয়ে দেওয়া; “make out” = কষ্টে দেখা বা বোঝা; “make for” = কোনো দিকে এগোনো; “make of” = কিছু সম্পর্কে ধারণা তৈরি করা (“What do you make of him?”); “make off with” = নিয়ে চম্পট দেওয়া; “make do with” = যা আছে তা দিয়েই চালিয়ে নেওয়া; “make it” = সময়মতো পৌঁছানো বা সফল হওয়া; “make up your mind” = সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া। ফাঁদ দুটো, আর দুটোই ছোট। এক, “make up” আর “make up for” এক নয়: “I'll make up the lost time” মানে দাঁড়ায় সময়টা বানিয়ে নেব, যেটা অর্থহীন; ক্ষতি পোষানোর জন্য for লাগবে — “I'll make up for the day I missed.” দুই, ভাগ করার নিয়ম: make up (বানানো বা মিটমাট) separable, তাই সাধারণ noun দুই জায়গাতেই বসে — “make up a story” বা “make a story up” — আর সর্বনাম হলে মাঝখানে, “make it up”। কিন্তু make up for, make for, make of, make off with আর make do with — সবগুলোই inseparable, তাই object পুরো বাক্যাংশের পরেই বসবে। আর “What do you make of it?” একটা বাঁধা প্রশ্ন, শব্দক্রম বদলানো যায় না। আর তিনটে ব্যবহার আলাদা করে চিনে রাখুন, কারণ এগুলো সত্যিকারের কাজে লাগে। “Make do with” হলো সীমিত সম্পদে চালিয়ে নেওয়ার ইংরেজি, আর বাংলায় আমরা যাকে বলি “কাজ চালিয়ে নেওয়া” — “There was no rice, so we made do with bread.” “Make out” কম আলোয় বা দূর থেকে কিছু চিনতে না পারা বোঝাতে: “It was so dark I couldn't make out his face” — চশমা, দূরত্ব বা খারাপ হাতের লেখা নিয়ে কথা বলতে এটাই সঠিক শব্দ। আর “make of” মতামত জিজ্ঞেস করার একটা মার্জিত উপায়, যেটা “What do you think?”-এর চেয়ে বেশি খোলা: “What do you make of the new policy?” এটা উত্তরদাতাকে ব্যাখ্যা করার জায়গা দেয়, শুধু হ্যাঁ-না নয়। মিটিংয়ে বা সাক্ষাৎকারে এই প্রশ্নটা জানা থাকলে আলোচনা অনেক দূর এগোয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I will make up the lost time. (meaning compensate)
I will make up for the lost time.
To compensate for something, you need 'make up for'. 'Make up' alone means to invent or to reconcile.
He made a mistake up.
He made up a mistake. / He made a story up.
When 'make up' means invent, the object goes after or in the middle, but 'a mistake' is not something you 'make up' — you 'make a mistake'.
What do you think of make it?
What do you make of it?
To ask someone's opinion, the fixed phrase is 'make of' — 'What do you make of it?', a literal translation error otherwise.
Tipsটিপস
- 'Make up' (invent / reconcile / apply cosmetics) is separable: 'make up a story' or 'make a story up', and with a pronoun it must split — 'make it up'. — 'Make up' (বানানো / মিটমাট / মেকআপ) separable: 'make up a story' বা 'make a story up', আর pronoun হলে ভাঙতেই হবে — 'make it up'।
- 'Make up for', 'make for' and 'make of' are inseparable — always keep the whole phrase before the object. — 'Make up for', 'make for' ও 'make of' inseparable — পুরো phrase সবসময় object-এর আগে একসাথে রাখুন।
- Don't confuse 'make' and 'do' — in Bangla both are 'করা', but English uses 'make' for creating and 'do' for performing an action. — 'Make' ও 'do' গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না — বাংলায় দুটোই 'করা', কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে তৈরি করা বোঝাতে 'make', আর কাজ সম্পাদন বোঝাতে 'do'।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between 'make up' and 'make up for'?
'Make up' can mean to invent (he made up an excuse) or to reconcile (they made up after the fight). 'Make up for' means to compensate for something: 'I worked extra to make up for the lost time.' The extra word 'for' changes the meaning completely.
What does 'make out' mean?
Most often it means to see, hear or understand something with difficulty: 'I could barely make out the sign in the fog.' It can also mean to manage or progress (How did you make out in the exam?).
Why do we say 'make a decision' but 'do homework'?
English uses 'make' for creating or producing a result (make a decision, make a cake) and 'do' for performing tasks or activities (do homework, do the dishes). In Bangla both translate to 'করা', so these must be memorised as fixed collocations.
