English Idioms for Daily Conversation
প্রতিদিনের কথায় ব্যবহৃত ইংরেজি Idiom
Introductionভূমিকা
You already say all of these — in Bangla. চল কিছু খেয়ে আসি is “let's grab a bite”. আজকের মতো থাক is “let's call it a day”. ব্যাপার না is “no big deal”. লেগে থাকো is “hang in there”. The ideas are not new to you and the situations happen every day; what is missing is only the English shape, which is short, fixed, and easier to remember than the grammar most people try to build instead.
এগুলো আপনি প্রতিদিনই বলেন — বাংলায়। “চল কিছু খেয়ে আসি” মানে “let's grab a bite”। “আজকের মতো থাক” মানে “let's call it a day”। “ব্যাপার না” মানে “no big deal”। “লেগে থাকো” মানে “hang in there”। ধারণাগুলো আপনার কাছে নতুন নয়, পরিস্থিতিগুলোও রোজ ঘটে; যেটা নেই সেটা কেবল ইংরেজি রূপটা — আর সেই রূপ ছোট, বাঁধা, আর বেশির ভাগ মানুষ যে ব্যাকরণ দিয়ে বাক্য বানাতে বসেন তার চেয়ে অনেক সহজে মনে থাকে।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Everyday idioms are short fixed phrases that replace a whole sentence: hit the sack, grab a bite, no big deal, hang in there, hit the road, give me a hand. They are the fastest route from correct English to natural English, because fluency is mostly a matter of how many ready-made pieces you can reach for.
প্রতিদিনের idiom হলো ছোট বাঁধা কিছু বাক্যাংশ, যেগুলো একটা গোটা বাক্যের জায়গা নেয়: hit the sack, grab a bite, no big deal, hang in there, hit the road, give me a hand। শুদ্ধ ইংরেজি থেকে স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজিতে যাওয়ার সবচেয়ে দ্রুত পথ এগুলোই, কারণ সাবলীলতা মূলত এই তৈরি টুকরোগুলোর কতগুলো হাতের কাছে আছে তার হিসাব।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
প্রতিদিনের দরকারি idiom গুলো অর্থসহ: “hit the sack” = ঘুমাতে যাওয়া (একই অর্থে “hit the hay”-ও চলে); “call it a day” = আজকের মতো থামা; “grab a bite” = তাড়াতাড়ি কিছু খেয়ে নেওয়া; “no big deal” = তেমন কিছু না, ব্যাপার না; “in a nutshell” = সংক্ষেপে; “hit the road” = রওনা দেওয়া; “give me a hand” = একটু সাহায্য করা; “hang in there” = হাল ছেড়ো না, লেগে থাকো; “take it easy” = ধীরে-সুস্থে নাও, চাপ নিয়ো না; “my bad” = আমার ভুল (খুবই কথ্য); “no worries” = কোনো সমস্যা নেই; “sounds good” = ঠিক আছে, চলবে। এখন সেই ছোট বদলগুলো, যেগুলোতে বাক্যাংশটা ভেঙে পড়ে। “Grab a bite” — bit নয়, bite; a bit মানে একটু, a bite মানে এক কামড় বা হালকা খাবার। “Give me a hand” — a বাদ দেওয়া যায় না, আর “an hand” নয় কারণ h এখানে উচ্চারিত হয়। “Hit the sack” — sack মানে বস্তা, আর কথাটা এসেছে খড়ভরা বস্তার বিছানা থেকে; শব্দ বদলে “hit the bed” বললে idiom থাকে না, যদিও বাক্যটা বোঝা যায়। “Hang in there” — শেষে there বসবেই। আর tense বদলায় মূল verb-এ: I hit the sack early, we called it a day, he gave me a hand। আর একটা কথা, যেটা কেবল শব্দের নয় — ভঙ্গির। এই idiom গুলো ঘরোয়া, বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ আর হালকা। বন্ধুর সাথে চ্যাটে, সহকর্মীর সাথে চায়ের বিরতিতে, পরিবারের সাথে — সবখানে চমৎকার। কিন্তু পরীক্ষার রচনায়, চাকরির দরখাস্তে বা অচেনা কোনো ঊর্ধ্বতনকে লেখা প্রথম ইমেইলে এগুলো বসাবেন না; ওখানে সরল শব্দই সঠিক — “I'm going to bed”, “Let's stop here for today”, “Could you help me with this?”। আর শেখার একটা সহজ নিয়ম মানুন: দিনে একটা সাধারণ বাক্যের বদলে একটা idiom ব্যবহার করুন, বেশি নয়। আজ “I'm tired”-এর বদলে “I'm going to hit the sack”; কাল “It's not a problem”-এর বদলে “No big deal”। দিনে একটা করে চললে মাসে ত্রিশটা — আর যেগুলো আপনি সত্যিই ব্যবহার করেছেন, কেবল সেগুলোই আপনার থাকবে।
