Introductionভূমিকা

The IELTS band descriptors reward idiomatic language used naturally — and they punish it used decoratively. That distinction decides a lot of speaking scores in Bangladesh, because the most common preparation strategy here is to memorise eight idioms and insert one into every answer. An examiner can hear the insertion. One idiom that genuinely fits the question is worth more than four that were waiting for a chance.

IELTS-এর ব্যান্ড বর্ণনায় স্বাভাবিকভাবে ব্যবহৃত idiom-এর জন্য নম্বর আছে — আর সাজসজ্জার জন্য বসানো idiom-এ নম্বর কাটা যায়। বাংলাদেশে speaking-এর অনেক স্কোর ঠিক এই তফাতেই নির্ধারিত হয়, কারণ এখানে সবচেয়ে চলতি প্রস্তুতি হলো আটটা idiom মুখস্থ করে প্রতিটা উত্তরে একটা করে ঢুকিয়ে দেওয়া। পরীক্ষক ঢোকানোটা শুনতে পান। প্রশ্নের সাথে সত্যিই মানানসই একটা idiom সুযোগের অপেক্ষায় থাকা চারটার চেয়ে বেশি দামি।

For IELTS Speaking, the useful idioms are the ordinary, modern ones people actually say — over the moon, a blessing in disguise, food for thought, see eye to eye — not the bookish proverbs found in exam guides. They are graded under Lexical Resource, and only accurate, well-placed use counts.

কাজের idiom গুলো অর্থসহ: “over the moon” = আনন্দে আটখানা; “on cloud nine” = একই অর্থে, প্রবল আনন্দে; “a blessing in disguise” = যে বিপদ শেষে ভালোর কারণ হয়; “get cold feet” = শেষ মুহূর্তে ভয় পেয়ে পিছিয়ে যাওয়া; “burn the midnight oil” = রাত জেগে পরিশ্রম করা; “the tip of the iceberg” = যা দেখা যাচ্ছে সেটা সমস্যার সামান্য অংশ; “food for thought” = ভাবার মতো কিছু; “see eye to eye” = একমত হওয়া; “in the long run” = দীর্ঘমেয়াদে; “once in a blue moon” = কালেভদ্রে; “a piece of cake” = খুব সহজ; “take it with a pinch of salt” = পুরোটা বিশ্বাস না করা। এবার কৌশলটা, কারণ এখানে idiom-এর তালিকার চেয়ে ব্যবহারের নিয়ম বেশি দামি। এক, পুরো পরীক্ষায় দুই থেকে তিনটের বেশি idiom ব্যবহার করবেন না, আর জোর করে ঢোকাবেন না; যেখানে নিজে থেকে আসে সেখানেই ব্যবহার করুন। দুই, Part 1-এর ছোট উত্তরে idiom বেমানান; Part 2-এর গল্প বলায় আর Part 3-এর মতামতে এগুলো সবচেয়ে ভালো খাটে। তিন, পুরোনো, বইয়ের ভাষার প্রবাদ এড়িয়ে চলুন — “Where there is a will there is a way” বা “Time and tide wait for none” লিখিত ইংরেজিতে ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু কথায় এগুলো এখন কেউ বলে না, আর বললে মুখস্থ শোনায়। চার, উচ্চারণ আর গতি স্বাভাবিক রাখুন; idiom বলার আগে থেমে গেলে পরীক্ষক বুঝে ফেলেন ওটা তৈরি করে আনা। আর সবচেয়ে কাজের প্রস্তুতিটা হলো তিন-চারটে idiom বেছে নিয়ে তাদের ঘিরে নিজের সত্যি গল্প তৈরি রাখা, কারণ IELTS-এর প্রশ্নগুলো ঘুরেফিরে একই কয়েকটা বিষয়ে আসে — পড়াশোনা, কাজ, পরিবার, শহর, ভবিষ্যৎ পরিকল্পনা। যেমন: “Not getting into my first-choice university felt terrible at the time, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise — the department I ended up in had far better teachers.” বা “My father and I don't always see eye to eye about my career, but we talk about it openly.” বা “Traffic is just the tip of the iceberg in Dhaka — the real problem is that the city keeps growing without a plan.” তিনটে বাক্য, তিনটে idiom, আর তিনটেই আপনার নিজের জীবন থেকে — এই তিনটে যেকোনো প্রশ্নের সাথে সামান্য বদলেই বসিয়ে দেওয়া যায়, আর তখন সেগুলো আর মুখস্থ শোনায় না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

The idiom is fixed and singular — always 'over the moon'.
I got cold foot before the test.

Forcing an idiom into every answer to sound advanced.
Using one or two idioms naturally, only where they fit.
