English Idioms about Numbers
সংখ্যা নিয়ে ইংরেজি Idioms
Introductionভূমিকা
Bangla thinks confusion looks like seven and five — সাত-পাঁচ ভাবা, thinking in every direction at once. English thinks it looks like six and seven: “at sixes and sevens”. Both languages reached for small numbers to describe a scattered mind and picked different ones, which is a fair warning about the rest of this page. The numbers in an English idiom are fixed, they are not arithmetic, and no number may be swapped for a neighbour.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Number idioms are fixed phrases in which the number carries no mathematical meaning at all: the eleventh hour is not eleven o'clock, cloud nine is not the ninth cloud, and square one is a starting square on a board game nobody plays any more.
সংখ্যার idiom হলো বাঁধা কিছু বাক্যাংশ, যেখানে সংখ্যাটার কোনো গাণিতিক অর্থই নেই: the eleventh hour মানে এগারোটা নয়, cloud nine মানে নয় নম্বর মেঘ নয়, আর square one হলো এমন এক বোর্ড-খেলার প্রথম ঘর যা এখন আর কেউ খেলে না।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
অর্থগুলো: “at the eleventh hour” = একেবারে শেষ মুহূর্তে; “on cloud nine” = পরম আনন্দে; “back to square one” = আবার একদম গোড়া থেকে শুরু; “have second thoughts” = দ্বিতীয়বার ভেবে দ্বিধায় পড়া; “put two and two together” = ইঙ্গিত জুড়ে আসল ব্যাপারটা বুঝে ফেলা; “at sixes and sevens” = সব এলোমেলো, বিশৃঙ্খল; “it takes two to tango” = দোষ একজনের একার নয়; “two-faced” = দুমুখো, বিশ্বাসঘাতক; “a one-off” = একবারই ঘটে এমন কিছু; “in two minds” = দোটানায় থাকা; “the whole nine yards” = পুরোপুরি, সবটুকু। এই দলে article-ই আসল পরীক্ষা, আর তিনটে idiom তিন রকম আচরণ করে। “At THE eleventh hour” — the বসবেই। “On cloud nine” — কোনো article নেই, “on the cloud nine” ভুল। “Back to square one” — এখানেও article নেই, “back to the square one” ভুল। এর কোনো নিয়ম নেই, তাই তিনটেকে একসাথে পাশাপাশি রেখে মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন। বাকি ফাঁদগুলো শব্দে: “the eleventh hour” — eleven নয়, eleventh; ক্রমবাচক সংখ্যা লাগবে। “Put two and two TOGETHER” — together বাদ দিলে বাক্যাংশটা থাকে না। “Have second thoughts ABOUT something” — of নয়। আর “two-faced” একটা বিশেষণ, তাই মানুষের আগে বা is-এর পরে বসে: “a two-faced colleague”, “He is two-faced”। আর ভঙ্গির দিক থেকে এই দলটা অস্বাভাবিক রকম উদার, তাই এগুলো কাজে লাগানোর সুযোগ বেশি। আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখাতেও নিরাপদ: “at the eleventh hour” (“An agreement was reached at the eleventh hour”), “back to square one”, “have second thoughts”, “a one-off”। কথ্য: “on cloud nine”, “at sixes and sevens”, “the whole nine yards”।
