Bangla keeps luck on the forehead — কপাল ভালো, কপাল পোড়া — something written before you arrived and not much you can do about it. English keeps luck in the hand: you have a stroke of luck, you get the luck of the draw, you luck out. The picture is of a blow or a lottery, something that lands on you today. Neither view is more correct, but the English phrases are built on the second one, and translating from the first is what makes them come out wrong.

Luck idioms describe the kind of luck, not just its presence: a stroke of luck is a single fortunate event, beginner's luck is undeserved success at a first attempt, the luck of the draw is pure chance with no skill involved, and down on your luck is a run of bad fortune, usually about money.

The fixed order is "a stroke of luck"; you cannot rearrange the words.
