Introductionভূমিকা

Some English proverbs already exist in Bangla, word for word. All that glitters is not gold is চকচক করলেই সোনা হয় না; too many cooks spoil the broth is অধিক সন্ন্যাসীতে গাজন নষ্ট; empty vessels make the most noise is অসারের তর্জন গর্জন সার. Those you barely have to learn — you already believe them. The trouble starts with the ones that have no Bangla twin at all, because there is nothing to hang them on, and those are the ones that have to be memorised exactly as they stand.

ইংরেজির কিছু প্রবাদ বাংলায় আগে থেকেই আছে, প্রায় হুবহু। All that glitters is not gold মানে চকচক করলেই সোনা হয় না; too many cooks spoil the broth মানে অধিক সন্ন্যাসীতে গাজন নষ্ট; empty vessels make the most noise মানে অসারের তর্জন গর্জন সার। এগুলো শেখারই দরকার নেই বলা যায় — আপনি এগুলো আগে থেকেই বিশ্বাস করেন। সমস্যা শুরু হয় সেগুলো নিয়ে, যাদের বাংলা যমজ নেই, কারণ ঝোলানোর মতো কোনো খুঁটি থাকে না — আর ঠিক ওগুলোই হুবহু যেভাবে আছে সেভাবে মুখস্থ করতে হয়।

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A proverb is a complete sentence that carries a piece of accepted wisdom — a warning, a rule of thumb, a moral. Unlike an idiom, it stands on its own, and unlike an idiom, it may be used in serious writing. The one thing it shares with an idiom is that not a single word may be changed.

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

যেগুলোর বাংলা যমজ আছে, সেগুলো আগে জড়ো করে নিন — এক পড়াতেই মনে থাকবে। “All that glitters is not gold” = চকচক করলেই সোনা হয় না। “Too many cooks spoil the broth” = অধিক সন্ন্যাসীতে গাজন নষ্ট। “Empty vessels make the most noise” = অসারের তর্জন গর্জন সার। “Barking dogs seldom bite” = যে গর্জে সে বর্ষে না। “Many a little makes a mickle” = বিন্দু বিন্দু জলে সিন্ধু হয়। “Cut your coat according to your cloth” = আয় বুঝে ব্যয় করো। “Look before you leap” = ভাবিয়া করিও কাজ। “As you sow, so shall you reap” = যেমন কর্ম তেমন ফল। “Union is strength” = একতাই বল। “Time and tide wait for none” = সময় ও স্রোত কারও জন্য অপেক্ষা করে না। “A drowning man catches at a straw” = ডুবন্ত মানুষ খড়কুটো আঁকড়ে ধরে। এই জোড়াগুলো এসএসসি-এইচএসসির অনুবাদ আর প্রবাদের প্রশ্নে বছরের পর বছর ঘুরে ফিরে আসে। এবার যেগুলোর হুবহু বাংলা নেই, সেগুলো — এদের বাংলা অর্থ বুঝে নিতে হয়, প্রতিশব্দ খুঁজে নয়। “Where there's a will, there's a way” = ইচ্ছা থাকলে উপায় হয়। “A friend in need is a friend indeed” = বিপদের বন্ধুই প্রকৃত বন্ধু — খেয়াল করুন শেষ শব্দটা “indeed”, “in deed” নয়; দুই শব্দে লিখলে অর্থ বদলে যায়। “Strike while the iron is hot” = সুযোগ থাকতে কাজে লেগে পড়া, বাংলায় ভাবটা “ঝোপ বুঝে কোপ মারা”। “Rome was not built in a day” = বড় কাজ সময় নেয়। “Don't count your chickens before they hatch” = ফল হাতে আসার আগে হিসাব কষে ফেলা উচিত নয়। “The early bird catches the worm” = যে আগে যায় সে-ই পায়। “Practice makes perfect” = অভ্যাসেই দক্ষতা। আর দুটো সতর্কতা, যেগুলো নম্বরের সাথে সরাসরি জড়িত। এক, প্রবাদের একটা শব্দও বদলানো চলে না, আর সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয় ছোট শব্দে: “Too many cooks spoil the broth” — food নয়, broth; “Where there's a will, there's a way” — শেষে “to it” বসে না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Where there is a will, there is a way to it.

    Where there's a will, there's a way.

Proverbs are fixed sayings; do not add extra words to the end.

  • A friend in need is a friend in deed.

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

The word is 'indeed' (truly), not 'in deed' — the proverb is fixed.

  • Too many cooks spoil the food.

Too many cooks spoil the broth.

The traditional wording is 'broth'; changing key words breaks the proverb.

  • Translating literally: 'strike while the iron is hot' = গরম লোহায় আঘাত করো.

    Meaning: act at the right moment — ঝোপ বুঝে কোপ মারো.

Learn the proverb's meaning and its Bangla equivalent, not a word-by-word translation.

Tipsটিপস

  • Learn each English proverb with its closest Bangla proverb — the meaning sticks much faster. প্রতিটি ইংরেজি প্রবাদ তার কাছের বাংলা প্রবাদসহ শিখুন — অর্থ অনেক দ্রুত মনে থাকে।
  • Use proverbs sparingly to add weight to advice; one well-placed proverb is enough. উপদেশে জোর দিতে প্রবাদ পরিমিতভাবে ব্যবহার করুন; একটাই যথেষ্ট।
  • Keep the wording exact — proverbs are fixed and should not be changed. শব্দ হুবহু রাখুন — প্রবাদ নির্দিষ্ট, বদলানো ঠিক নয়।
  • Proverbs suit speeches, essays and writing where a memorable line strengthens your point. বক্তৃতা, রচনা ও লেখায় যেখানে মনে রাখার মতো একটি লাইন দরকার, সেখানে প্রবাদ মানায়।
