Zero and First Conditional
Zero and First Conditional
Introduction
Two Bangla sentences with the same shape — that -লে ending doing the same work in both. English will not treat them alike. The first is a fact that repeats forever, the second happens once and only if the sky agrees, and English gives each of them its own pattern. That is why the two look arbitrary to us: our first language never asked us to tell them apart.
Definition
Zero conditional: if plus present simple, then present simple — for what is always true. First conditional: if plus present simple, then will plus the base verb — for one real, likely result in the future.
Zero conditional: if + present simple, First conditional: if + present simple, তারপর will + verb-এর মূল রূপ — ভবিষ্যতের একটা বাস্তব, সম্ভাব্য ফলের জন্য।
Bangla Explanation
**Zero conditional** — গঠন: If + present simple, present simple। 'If you heat ice, it **melts**', 'If you press this button, the fan **stops**', 'If it rains heavily, the road in front of our house **goes** under water'। **First conditional** — গঠন: If + present simple, subject + will + verb-এর মূল রূপ। এটা বসে একবারের ঘটনায়, যেটা সত্যিই ঘটতে পারে: 'If it **rains** tomorrow, we **will stay** home', 'If you **work** hard, you **will pass**'। ** 'If it **will rain**' ❌, 'If it **rains**' ✅। একই নিয়ম when, as soon as, before, after, until-এর বেলাতেও খাটে: 'When you **reach** Dhaka, call me'। ফলের অংশে will ছাড়াও অন্য কিছু বসতে পারে — modal বসিয়ে সম্ভাবনা কমানো যায় ('If you hurry, you **may** catch the bus'), আর সরাসরি আদেশও বসে ('If it rains, **take** an umbrella')। **unless** মানেই 'if not', তাই তার পরে আর না-বোধক বসে না: 'Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus' ✅। আর কমার নিয়মটা সহজ — if-এর অংশ আগে থাকলে মাঝখানে কমা, পরে থাকলে কমা নেই: 'We will stay home **if** it rains'। 'If I go to Sylhet, I will visit the shrine' মানে যাওয়াটা এখনো অনিশ্চিত। 'When I go to Sylhet, I will visit the shrine' মানে যাওয়া নিশ্চিত, শুধু দিনক্ষণ ঠিক হয়নি।

Common Mistakes
If it will rain, we will stay home.
If it rains, we will stay home.
Never use 'will' in the if-clause; the condition takes the present simple.
If you will heat ice, it melts.
If you heat ice, it melts.
For a general fact (zero conditional), both clauses use the present simple.
If you study hard, you pass the exam. (meaning a future result)
If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
For a real future result (first conditional), the result clause needs 'will'.
If it rains we will stay home. (no comma)
If it rains, we will stay home.
When the if-clause comes first, put a comma before the result clause.
Tips
- Use the zero conditional for facts and rules; use the first conditional for real future possibilities.
- Keep the if-clause in the present simple — 'will' only ever appears in the result clause.
- You can swap the order: 'result + if-clause' needs no comma; 'if-clause + result' needs one. — ক্রম বদলানো যায়: 'result + if' হলে comma লাগে না; 'if + result' হলে comma লাগে।

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the zero and first conditional?
The zero conditional states facts that are always true (both clauses present simple); the first conditional describes a real, likely future result (if + present, will + verb).
Can I use 'will' after 'if'?
No. In these conditionals the if-clause always uses the present simple. 'Will' belongs only in the result clause.
Do I always need a comma?
Only when the if-clause comes first: 'If it rains, we stay in.' If the result comes first, no comma is needed: 'We stay in if it rains.'
