Wish and If Only in English
Wish and If Only
Introduction
We use 'wish' and 'if only' to talk about things we would like to be different — an unreal present, a regret about the past, or an annoying habit we want to change. The tense after 'wish' shifts back one step, and that shift is the whole trick.
Definition
'Wish' and 'if only' express a desire for a different reality. Use wish + past simple for the present, wish + past perfect for the past, and wish + would for annoying habits or changes we want.
'Wish' ও 'if only' ভিন্ন বাস্তবতার আকাঙ্ক্ষা প্রকাশ করে।
Bangla Explanation
নিয়ম: বর্তমানের অবাস্তব ইচ্ছায় “wish + past simple” বসে — “I wish I had a car” (এখন গাড়ি নেই, থাকলে ভালো হতো)। be-verb-এর ক্ষেত্রে সব subject-এর সাথেই সাধারণত 'were' বসে — “I wish I were rich.” অতীতের আফসোসে “wish + past perfect” — “I wish I had studied harder” (তখন পড়িনি, তাই আফসোস)। কারো অভ্যাসে বিরক্তি বা পরিবর্তনের ইচ্ছায় “wish + would” — “I wish it would stop raining.” মনে রাখুন — 'if only' একই নিয়মে চলে, তবে আবেগ আরও জোরালো: “If only I had known!” আর নিজের কাজের জন্য 'wish...would' ব্যবহার করা যায় না; সেখানে 'could' বসে — “I wish I could sing.”
