Introductionভূমিকা

Say the Bangla out loud: ইশ্‌, যদি আমার একটা গাড়ি থাকত. The wish is about right now, this minute, and yet the verb has quietly slipped into the past — থাকত, not আছে. English does the identical thing: I wish I had a car. Nobody has to teach you the logic of this, because you have been using it since childhood. All that is left is learning which past form goes where.

বাংলা বাক্যটা একবার জোরে বলুন: 'ইশ্‌, যদি আমার একটা গাড়ি থাক**ত**।' ইচ্ছেটা এই মুহূর্তের, ঠিক এখনকার — অথচ ক্রিয়াটা চুপচাপ অতীতে সরে গেছে; 'আছে' নয়, 'থাকত'। ইংরেজি হুবহু একই কাজ করে: I wish I **had** a car। এর যুক্তিটা আপনাকে কাউকে শেখাতে হবে না, কারণ ছোটবেলা থেকেই আপনি এটা ব্যবহার করে আসছেন। বাকি থাকে শুধু এটুকু শেখা — কোন জায়গায় অতীতের কোন রূপটা বসবে।

Wish and if only ask for a reality other than the one you have. Wish plus past simple covers the present; wish plus past perfect covers a regret about the past; wish plus would covers somebody else's habit that you want changed.

তিনটে ছাঁচ, তিনটে আলাদা সময়। **এক, বর্তমানের অবাস্তব ইচ্ছা — wish + past simple**: 'I wish I **had** a car' (এখন গাড়ি নেই), 'I wish I **knew** her number'। be-verb হলে সব পুরুষেই were: 'I wish I **were** taller'। **দুই, অতীতের আফসোস — wish + past perfect**: 'I wish I **had studied** harder' (তখন পড়িনি, এখন আফসোস), 'I wish I **had not said** that'। **তিন, বিরক্তিকর অভ্যাস বা কাঙ্ক্ষিত পরিবর্তন — wish + would**: 'I wish it **would stop** raining', 'I wish he **would listen** to me'। বাংলার সাথে মিলটা এখানে এতটাই কাছাকাছি যে ছাঁচগুলো মনে রাখা সহজ হয়ে যায়। বর্তমানের ইচ্ছায় বাংলা বসায় '-ত': 'যদি জান**তাম**' — ইংরেজি বসায় past simple, 'I wish I **knew**'। অতীতের আফসোসে বাংলা এক ধাপ বেশি পিছোয়: 'যদি জেনে থাক**তাম**' — ইংরেজিও এক ধাপ বেশি পিছোয়, 'I wish I **had known**'। দুই ভাষাই একই কৌশল ব্যবহার করছে: **বাস্তব থেকে যত দূরে, ক্রিয়া তত পেছনে।** একটা সীমা আলাদা করে জেনে রাখা দরকার, কারণ এখানে ভুলটা কানে ধরা পড়ে না। **নিজের কাজের জন্য wish + would বসে না।** 'I wish I would sing' ❌ — কারণ would এখানে অন্য কাউকে বদলানোর ইচ্ছা বোঝায়, আর নিজেকে বদলানোর জন্য অন্যের অপেক্ষা করা অর্থহীন। নিজের সামর্থ্যের কথা বলতে **could** বসে: 'I wish I **could** sing', 'I wish I **could** go with you'। **If only** হুবহু একই নিয়মে চলে, শুধু আবেগটা জোরালো — বাংলার 'ইশ্‌, যদি…'-র মতো। 'If only I **had known**!', 'If only he **were** here'। বাক্যটা প্রায়ই অসম্পূর্ণ রেখে দেওয়া হয়, আর সেটাই এর জোর: 'If only I had listened to my father…' শেষে দুটো সতর্কতা, যেগুলো খাতায় নম্বর বাঁচায়। এক, wish-এর পরে **will বসে না** — 'I wish it will rain' ❌, 'I wish it **would** rain' ✅। দুই, wish-এ ব্যবহৃত past কোনোভাবেই অতীতের কথা বলছে না; 'I wish I had a car' মানে গতকাল গাড়ি ছিল না, তা নয় — মানে **এখন** নেই। এই এক কথা মনে রাখলে wish আর past tense কখনো গুলিয়ে যাবে না।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I wish I have more money.

    I wish I had more money.

    For an unreal present, 'wish' is followed by the past simple (had), not the present.

  • I wish I would be taller.

    I wish I were taller.

    For a present state use 'were'; 'wish + would' is not used for your own state.

  • I wish I studied harder for that exam.

    I wish I had studied harder for that exam.

    For a past regret use the past perfect (had studied), not the past simple.

  • I wish I would sing well.

    I wish I could sing well.

    For your own ability use 'could', not 'would'.
