Used To in English
Used To (আগে করতাম / অভ্যস্ত হওয়া)
Introductionভূমিকা
In Bangla these are two completely unrelated ideas. আগে খেলতাম is a habit that ended; অভ্যস্ত হয়ে গেছি is being comfortable with something. No Bengali speaker would ever confuse them. English, unhelpfully, gave both of them almost the same three words, and the only thing keeping them apart is what comes after to — a bare verb for one, an -ing for the other.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Used to plus the base verb describes a past habit or state that is no longer true — I used to smoke. Be or get used to plus a noun or an -ing form means being, or becoming, comfortable with something — I am used to the heat.
Used to + verb-এর মূল রূপ বোঝায় অতীতের এমন অভ্যাস বা অবস্থা, যা এখন আর সত্য নয় — I used to smoke। Be বা get used to + noun কিংবা -ing রূপ বোঝায় কোনো কিছুতে অভ্যস্ত থাকা বা হয়ে ওঠা — I am used to the heat।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
**প্রথম গঠন — অতীতের অভ্যাস।** 'used to + verb-এর মূল রূপ' — 'I **used to play** cricket after school' মানে আগে খেলতাম, এখন খেলি না। 'I **didn't use to** like tea' ✅, 'Did you **use to** live here?' ✅ — এখানে used নয়, **use**। উচ্চারণে তফাত নেই বলে ভুলটা কানে ধরা পড়ে না, শুধু লেখায় ধরা পড়ে। **দ্বিতীয় গঠন — অভ্যস্ত হওয়া।** 'be used to + noun বা verb + ing' — 'I **am used to waking up** early', 'She is used to the traffic'। আর 'get used to' মানে ধীরে ধীরে অভ্যস্ত হয়ে ওঠা — 'He **is getting used to** the new office'। এখানে to-এর পরে verb-এর মূল রূপ বসে না, কারণ এই to হলো preposition, infinitive-এর to নয়। 'I am used to **wake** up early' ❌ — হবে 'waking up'। দুটো আলাদা করার সহজ পরীক্ষা: **সামনে be-verb আছে কি না দেখুন।** 'I used to…' — কোনো am, is, are, was নেই, তাই এটা অতীতের অভ্যাস, আর পরে verb-এর মূল রূপ বসবে। 'I **am** used to…' — be-verb আছে, তাই এটা অভ্যস্ত হওয়া, আর পরে -ing বসবে। এক সেকেন্ডের এই পরীক্ষাটাই এই অধ্যায়ের সবচেয়ে চেনা ভুলটা বন্ধ করে দেয়। শেষে একটা কাছাকাছি গঠন, যেটা জানলে লেখা বৈচিত্র্যময় হয়: অতীতের বারবার ঘটা কাজ বোঝাতে **would**-ও বসে — 'Every winter we **would go** to our village'। তবে would কেবল কাজের জন্য, অবস্থার জন্য নয়। তাই 'I **used to have** a bicycle' ✅ কিন্তু 'I would have a bicycle' ❌ — মালিকানা কোনো বারবার করা কাজ নয়। সন্দেহ হলে used to লিখুন; সেটা দুই ক্ষেত্রেই নিরাপদ।
