Two office emails, one word apart. “I have not received the payment yet.” “I still have not received the payment.” The facts are identical; the second one is a complaint. English hides that much feeling in a three-letter adverb and in where you choose to put it — and position, not meaning, is where nearly everyone slips.

অর্থ আগে: **still = এখনো চলছে**, **yet = এখনো হয়নি**, **already = এর মধ্যেই হয়ে গেছে**। এবার অবস্থান, আর এখানেই আসল ভুলটা হয়। **Still** বসে মূল ক্রিয়ার আগে, কিন্তু be-ক্রিয়ার পরে: 'He **still** works there', 'He is **still** at work'। না-বোধক বাক্যে still বসে not-এর **আগে**: 'He **still** hasn't called'। **Yet** প্রায় সবসময় বাক্যের একদম শেষে: 'He hasn't called **yet**', 'Have you eaten **yet**?' **Already** বসে মাঝখানে, অর্থাৎ have বা has-এর পরে ও মূল ক্রিয়ার আগে — 'I have **already** eaten' — কিংবা জোর দিতে চাইলে শেষে: 'I have eaten **already**'। Still আর yet-এর তফাতটা কেবল ব্যাকরণের নয়, সুরেরও, আর অফিসে এই তফাতটা কাজে লাগে। 'not … **yet**' নিরপেক্ষ — কাজটা এখনো হয়নি, ব্যস। '**still** not' অধৈর্য — অনেকক্ষণ হয়ে গেল, এখনো হচ্ছে না। 'The bus hasn't come **yet**' মানে আপনি অপেক্ষা করছেন; 'The bus **still** hasn't come' মানে আপনি বিরক্ত। দরখাস্ত বা ক্লায়েন্টের ইমেইলে এই পার্থক্যটা না জেনে still বসিয়ে দিলে চিঠির সুর বদলে যায়। Already-রও একটা বাড়তি ব্যবহার আছে। প্রশ্নে বসলে সেটা বিস্ময় বোঝায়: 'Have you finished **already**?' মানে এত তাড়াতাড়ি? এখানে already কোনো তথ্য চাইছে না, চমকটা প্রকাশ করছে। একই কারণে 'Is it five o'clock already?' — সময় কীভাবে চলে গেল, সেই বিস্ময়। শেষে কালের কথা। তিনটেরই সাথে সাধারণত **present perfect** বসে, কারণ এরা 'এখন পর্যন্ত' বোঝায়। আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে already আর yet past simple-এও চলে — 'Did you eat yet?' — কিন্তু আমাদের দেশে ব্রিটিশ ধারা অনুসরণ করা হয়, তাই খাতায় present perfect লেখাই নিরাপদ। আর still-এর একটা আলাদা কাজও আছে যেটা এই দলে পড়ে না: বাক্যের শুরুতে বসে এটা 'তবুও' বোঝায় — 'It was raining. **Still**, we went out'।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

I have yet not received the parcel.
I haven't received the parcel yet.
'Yet' goes at the end of the sentence, not before 'not'.
He already has finished his work.
He has already finished his work.
'Already' sits after 'has/have', before the main verb.
She is still not come.
She still hasn't come.
'Come' needs the perfect form here: has not come. 'Is not come' is not English.

Position: still goes before the main verb, yet goes at the end, already goes in the middle. — জায়গা: still মূল ক্রিয়ার আগে, yet বাক্যের শেষে, already মাঝখানে।
'Yet' lives in negatives and questions. If your sentence is positive, you probably want 'already'. — 'Yet' থাকে না-বাচক ও প্রশ্নে। বাক্য হ্যাঁ-বাচক হলে সম্ভবত 'already' লাগবে।
Use 'still hasn't' when you want to sound impatient; 'hasn't yet' is neutral. — অধৈর্য বোঝাতে 'still hasn't'; নিরপেক্ষ বলতে 'hasn't yet'।
'Already' near the end adds surprise: 'You've finished already?' — 'Already' শেষের দিকে বসালে বিস্ময় যোগ হয়: 'You've finished already?'

Can 'still' be used in negatives?

Yes — 'He still hasn't replied'. Note the order: still comes before the negative, and the meaning gains impatience.

Is 'Did you eat yet?' wrong?

Not in American English, where it is normal. In British English — which Bangladeshi exams follow — use 'Have you eaten yet?'

What is the difference between 'yet' and 'still' in a question?

'Have you finished yet?' asks whether it is done. 'Are you still working?' asks whether it is continuing. Different questions entirely.

Does 'yet' have other meanings?

Yes — as a conjunction it means 'but': 'He is young, yet very experienced.' That is a separate use from the time adverb here.
