Parts of Speech in English
Parts of Speech (পদ প্রকরণ)
Introductionভূমিকা
You already learned this once, in Bangla, and you learned it with five categories: বিশেষ্য, সর্বনাম, বিশেষণ, ক্রিয়া, অব্যয়. English uses eight. The extra three are not new ideas — they were all sitting inside Bangla's অব্যয়, which quietly holds prepositions, conjunctions and interjections in one bag. Knowing that is worth more than memorising the list, because it tells you exactly which three groups will feel unfamiliar and why.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A part of speech is the class a word belongs to because of the job it does in a particular sentence — not a label stuck permanently to the word. Traditional grammar names eight: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection.
Part of speech মানে কোনো শব্দ একটি নির্দিষ্ট বাক্যে যে কাজ করছে, সেই কাজ অনুযায়ী তার শ্রেণি — শব্দটার গায়ে চিরকালের জন্য সাঁটা কোনো লেবেল নয়। প্রচলিত ব্যাকরণে আটটি শ্রেণি: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction ও interjection।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
আটটি ভাগ এক নজরে। **১) Noun** (বিশেষ্য) — নাম বোঝায়: Rahim, Dhaka, rice, honesty। **২) Pronoun** (সর্বনাম) — noun-এর জায়গায় বসে, যাতে নামটা বারবার বলতে না হয়: he, she, it, they, we। **৩) Verb** (ক্রিয়া) — কাজ বা অবস্থা বোঝায়: eat, run, write; আর is, am, are, was-ও verb, এরা অবস্থা বোঝায়। **৪) Adjective** (বিশেষণ) — noun-এর গুণ, সংখ্যা বা পরিমাণ বলে: tall, red, three, honest। **৫) Adverb** (ক্রিয়া-বিশেষণ) — verb, adjective বা আরেকটি adverb-কে বর্ণনা করে: quickly, very, yesterday, here। **৬) Preposition** — noun বা pronoun-এর সাথে বাক্যের বাকি অংশের সম্পর্ক দেখায়: in, on, at, from, with। **৭) Conjunction** — শব্দ বা বাক্য জোড়া লাগায়: and, but, because, although। **৮) Interjection** — হঠাৎ আবেগ প্রকাশ করে, পরে সাধারণত বিস্ময়চিহ্ন বসে: Oh! Wow! Alas! বাংলা ব্যাকরণ পড়ে আসা যে কারও জন্য ছয় নম্বরটাই সবচেয়ে অচেনা, আর কারণটা গঠনগত। বাংলায় এই কাজটা করে **অনুসর্গ**, আর সে বসে noun-এর **পরে** — 'টেবিলের উপর', 'বাড়ির ভিতরে', 'আমার জন্য'। ইংরেজির preposition বসে noun-এর **আগে** — on the table, inside the house, for me। ** 'Give me some **water**'-এ water হলো noun, কিন্তু '**Water** the plants'-এ সেই water-ই verb। 'Take a **fast** bus'-এ fast হলো adjective, কারণ সে bus-কে বর্ণনা করছে; 'He walks **fast**'-এ সেই fast-ই adverb, কারণ সে walks-কে বর্ণনা করছে। a, an, the, my, this, some, many — পুরোনো বইগুলো এদের adjective-এর ভেতরে রাখে, আর আধুনিক ব্যাকরণ এদের আলাদা নাম দেয় **determiner**। দুটোই আপনি পাঠ্যবইয়ে দেখবেন, আর পরীক্ষায় দুটোই গ্রহণযোগ্য। কাজের দিক থেকে এরা noun-এর সামনে বসে noun-টাকে নির্দিষ্ট করে দেয়, আর একটা noun-এর সামনে একবারেই একটা determiner বসে — 'the my book' বলে কিছু হয় না।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Rahim bought two kilos of rice from the market.রহিম বাজার থেকে দুই কেজি চাল কিনল। (Rahim, rice, market = noun; bought = verb; two = adjective; from = preposition)
- She is waiting for the bus at Farmgate.সে ফার্মগেটে বাসের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে। (She = pronoun; is waiting = verb; for, at = preposition)
- The CNG driver drove very carefully in the rain.সিএনজি চালক বৃষ্টির মধ্যে খুব সাবধানে চালালেন। (carefully = adverb, drove-কে বর্ণনা করছে; very = adverb, carefully-কে বর্ণনা করছে)
- This shop sells fresh fish and vegetables.এই দোকানে টাটকা মাছ ও সবজি বিক্রি হয়। (fresh = adjective; and = conjunction)
- He walks fast, but his younger brother walks faster.সে দ্রুত হাঁটে, কিন্তু তার ছোট ভাই আরও দ্রুত হাঁটে। (fast এখানে adverb; but = conjunction)
- Water the plants before you leave for school.স্কুলে যাওয়ার আগে গাছে পানি দিয়ে যেও। (এখানে water হলো verb, noun নয়)
- Oh! I have left my umbrella in the CNG.ওহ! আমি ছাতাটা সিএনজিতে ফেলে এসেছি। (Oh = interjection)
- Because it was raining, we stayed at home.যেহেতু বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল, আমরা বাসাতেই ছিলাম। (Because = conjunction, দুটি বাক্যকে জোড়া লাগাচ্ছে)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
She sings very beautiful.
She sings very beautifully.
Bangla uses one word (সুন্দর) for both the adjective and the adverb, so learners forget English marks the adverb with -ly. 'Beautiful' describes a noun; 'beautifully' describes the verb 'sings'.
I am agree with you.
I agree with you.
In Bangla, 'একমত' behaves like an adjective after হওয়া, so 'am' feels necessary. But 'agree' is a verb in English, and a verb does not need 'am/is/are' in front of it.
Though he is poor, but he is honest.
Though he is poor, he is honest.
Bangla joins the two halves with a pair — যদিও … কিন্তু — so both words feel required. English uses only one conjunction to join two clauses; keep 'though' or keep 'but', never both.
My all friends came to the programme.
All my friends came to the programme.
Bangla says আমার সব বন্ধু, with the possessive first. In English the determiner 'all' comes before the possessive 'my'.
Tipsটিপস
- Do not ask 'what part of speech is this word' — ask 'what is this word doing in this sentence'. The answer changes with the sentence. — 'এই শব্দটা কোন part of speech' না ভেবে ভাবুন 'এই বাক্যে শব্দটা কী কাজ করছে'। বাক্য বদলালে উত্তরও বদলায়।
- If a word describes a noun, it is an adjective. If it describes a verb, it is an adverb. That one test settles most confusions. — শব্দটি noun-কে বর্ণনা করলে adjective, আর verb-কে বর্ণনা করলে adverb। এই একটি পরীক্ষাতেই বেশিরভাগ দ্বিধা মিটে যায়।
- Not every adverb ends in -ly (fast, hard, late, well), and not every -ly word is an adverb (friendly, lovely and lonely are adjectives). — সব adverb -ly দিয়ে শেষ হয় না (fast, hard, late, well), আবার -ly থাকলেই adverb নয় (friendly, lovely, lonely আসলে adjective)।
- Learn a new word together with its part of speech and one sentence — a word learned without its job is a word you cannot use. — নতুন শব্দ শেখার সময় তার part of speech আর একটি বাক্য একসাথে শিখুন — কাজ না জেনে শেখা শব্দ ব্যবহার করা যায় না।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How many parts of speech are there in English?
Traditional grammar names eight: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Many modern grammars add a ninth class, determiner, for words like a, the, this and my, which older books simply counted as adjectives.
Can one word be more than one part of speech?
Yes, and this is normal in English. 'Book' is a noun in 'I read a book' and a verb in 'Book two tickets'. The sentence decides, so always look at the job the word is doing.
Is 'the' an adjective or an article?
Both names are used. 'The', 'a' and 'an' are called articles, and older grammar books group articles under adjectives because they come before a noun. Modern grammars call them determiners. Whichever name your book uses, their job is the same.
Why do I need parts of speech if I already speak some English?
Because most corrections depend on them. Knowing that 'carefully' is an adverb and 'careful' is an adjective is what lets you decide which one belongs after 'He drives'. Without that, you can only guess.
