Modifiers: Rules and Exam Practice
Modifier (বিশেষণ ও বিশেষণস্থানীয় শব্দ)
Introductionভূমিকা
A modifier is any word or group of words that adds information to another word. The exam item looks difficult because the instruction only says 'use modifiers', but almost every blank wants one of six predictable things, and once you can name them the item becomes mechanical.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A modifier describes or limits another word. A pre-modifier comes before the word it describes (a beautiful garden); a post-modifier comes after it (a garden full of roses).
Modifier অন্য শব্দকে বর্ণনা বা সীমিত করে। যেটি বর্ণিত শব্দের আগে বসে তা pre-modifier (a beautiful garden), আর পরে বসলে post-modifier (a garden full of roses)।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
**ক. দুই ভাগ** - **Pre-modifier** — যাকে বর্ণনা করছে তার **আগে**: *a **hardworking** student*, *he walks **slowly***। - **Post-modifier** — তার **পরে**: *the boy **standing there***, *a book **on the table***। **খ. Pre-modifier হিসেবে যা বসতে পারে (পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি)** 1. **Adjective** — *a **brilliant** result* 2. **Adverb (adjective-কে বর্ণনা করে)** — *a **very** brilliant result* 3. **Determiner / Article / Quantifier** — *the*, *a*, *some*, *many*, *each* 4. **Noun adjective (noun হয়ে অন্য noun-কে বর্ণনা)** — *a **college** teacher*, *a **cotton** shirt* 5. **Participle** — *a **running** train*, *a **broken** chair* 6. **Possessive** — *my*, *his*, *Rahim's* **গ. Post-modifier হিসেবে যা বসতে পারে** 1. **Prepositional phrase** — *the man **in the blue shirt*** 2. **Relative clause** — *the man **who came yesterday*** 3. **Participle phrase** — *the boy **sitting in the corner*** 4. **Infinitive phrase** — *a chance **to prove himself*** 5. **Appositive** — *Dhaka, **the capital of Bangladesh**, is very crowded* 6. **Adverb / adverbial** — *he came **late***, *she sang **in a low voice*** **ঘ. পরীক্ষায় কীভাবে ধরবেন** প্রশ্নে সাধারণত বন্ধনীতে ইঙ্গিত থাকে — *(pre-modify the noun)*, *(post-modify the verb)*, *(use a participle)*। ইঙ্গিতটাই আপনার উত্তর ঠিক করে দেয়: - **pre-modify the noun** → adjective বসান: *He is a ___ boy.* → **good/honest/brilliant** - **post-modify the verb** → adverb বা adverbial বসান: *He runs ___.* → **fast / in the morning** - **use a participle** → -ing বা -ed রূপ: *The ___ boy is my brother.* → **crying / injured** - **use an appositive** → দুই কমার মাঝে পরিচয়: *Nazrul, ___, wrote 'Bidrohi'.* → **our national poet** - **use an infinitive** → to + verb: *He went to the market ___.* → **to buy vegetables** **ঙ. সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ — Misplaced ও Dangling modifier** Modifier যাকে বর্ণনা করছে **তার যত কাছে সম্ভব** বসাতে হয়। দূরে বসালে অর্থ পাল্টে যায়: - ❌ *He **almost** drove his children to school every day.* (তিনি প্রায় চালিয়েছিলেন, কিন্তু চালাননি) - ✅ *He drove his children to school **almost** every day.* আর participle দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু করলে, তার পরপরই সেই কর্তা থাকতে হবে যে কাজটা করছে: - ❌ *Walking down the road, a snake was seen.* (মনে হচ্ছে সাপটা হাঁটছিল) - ✅ *Walking down the road, **I** saw a snake.* এই দুটো ভুল বোর্ড পরীক্ষায় এবং IELTS Writing দুই জায়গাতেই নম্বর কাটে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Walking down the road, a snake was seen by me.
Walking down the road, I saw a snake.
A dangling modifier — the opening phrase must describe the subject that follows it, and a snake was not walking.
He almost drove his children to school every day.
He drove his children to school almost every day.
A misplaced modifier changes the meaning: the first sentence says he nearly drove but did not.
She is a beautiful very girl.
She is a very beautiful girl.
The adverb modifies the adjective, so it must come immediately before it.
The man was standing there who is my uncle.
The man who is standing there is my uncle.
A relative clause must sit next to the noun it modifies, not at the end of the sentence.
I only ate rice yesterday.
I ate only rice yesterday.
'Only' next to 'ate' means eating was the sole action; next to 'rice' it means rice was the sole food, which is usually what is meant.
Tipsটিপস
- Read the instruction in brackets first — it names the type of modifier and therefore the answer. — বন্ধনীর নির্দেশনা আগে পড়ুন — ওখানেই বলা আছে কোন ধরনের modifier চাই।
- Keep every modifier as close as possible to the word it describes. — প্রতিটি modifier যাকে বর্ণনা করছে তার যত কাছে সম্ভব বসান।
- If a sentence starts with an -ing phrase, the very next noun must be the doer. — বাক্য -ing phrase দিয়ে শুরু হলে, ঠিক পরের noun-ই সেই কাজের কর্তা হতে হবে।
- Pre-modify a noun with an adjective; post-modify a verb with an adverb. That covers most blanks. — Noun-এর আগে adjective, verb-এর পরে adverb — বেশিরভাগ শূন্যস্থানে এতেই চলে যায়।

Is 'modifier' the same as 'adjective'?
No. An adjective is one kind of modifier. Adverbs, participles, prepositional phrases, relative clauses, infinitives and appositives are all modifiers too.
How many marks does this item carry?
In SSC English second paper it is usually a ten-blank item worth five marks, so the marks per minute are high once you know the six types.
What is the difference between a misplaced and a dangling modifier?
A misplaced modifier describes the wrong word in the sentence. A dangling one has nothing in the sentence to describe at all, usually because the doer was left out.
Do modifiers matter outside the exam?
Yes. Misplaced modifiers are one of the commonest causes of unclear writing in emails and reports, and IELTS examiners mark them under grammatical range and accuracy.
