Introductionভূমিকা

Say “I have a few friends in Dhaka” and you sound settled. Drop the a — “I have few friends in Dhaka” — and you have just told your listener you are lonely. One letter, and the mood of the sentence turns over. Bangla carries that difference in whole phrases (কিছু বন্ধু আছে against বন্ধু নেই বললেই চলে), never in a single sound, which is why the letter goes missing so easily and the sentence quietly says the opposite of what was meant.

“I have a few friends in Dhaka” বললে মনে হয় আপনি বেশ থিতু হয়েছেন। শুধু a-টা ফেলে দিন — “I have few friends in Dhaka” — আর আপনি শ্রোতাকে জানিয়ে দিলেন যে আপনি একা। একটা মাত্র অক্ষর, আর গোটা বাক্যের সুর উল্টে গেল। বাংলায় এই তফাতটা বইতে হয় পুরো বাক্যাংশকে ('কিছু বন্ধু আছে' বনাম 'বন্ধু নেই বললেই চলে'), কোনো একটামাত্র ধ্বনিকে নয়। তাই অক্ষরটা সহজেই পড়ে যায়, আর বাক্য নিঃশব্দে উল্টো কথাটা বলে বসে।

Few and a few go with things you can count; little and a little go with things you measure. The a is the part that carries the attitude: with it, you are saying some, and it is enough. Without it, you are saying hardly any, and it is not enough.

Few আর a few বসে গোনা যায় এমন জিনিসের সাথে; little আর a little বসে মাপা হয় এমন জিনিসের সাথে। আর মনোভাবটা বহন করে ওই a-টাই: সেটা থাকলে অর্থ 'কিছুটা আছে, চলে যাবে'; না থাকলে অর্থ 'নেই বললেই চলে, হবে না'।

দুটো সিদ্ধান্ত পরপর নিতে হয়। **প্রথম সিদ্ধান্ত — গোনা যায় কি না।** গোনা যায় এমন noun-এর সাথে few বা a few: friends, books, students, mangoes। মাপা হয় এমন noun-এর সাথে little বা a little: water, time, money, rice, information। **দ্বিতীয় সিদ্ধান্ত — সুর কী।** a বসালে সুর ইতিবাচক, না বসালে নেতিবাচক। 'I have **a few** friends' মানে কিছু বন্ধু আছে, ভালোই আছি। 'I have **few** friends' মানে বন্ধু প্রায় নেই। 'There is **a little** time' মানে অল্প সময় আছে, কাজটা হয়ে যাবে। 'There is **little** time' মানে সময় নেই বললেই চলে, তাড়াতাড়ি করো। এক লাইনে গেঁথে নিন: **few আর little হতাশার সুর, a few আর a little আশার সুর।** এই কারণেই few আর little-এর সাথে প্রায়ই very বসে জোর বাড়াতে — 'very few students came', 'very little water is left' — কিন্তু a few বা a little-এর সাথে very বসে না। এখন সেই কথাটা, যেটা বেশিরভাগ বই এড়িয়ে যায়, অথচ পড়তে গিয়ে বারবার ধাক্কা দেয়: **quite a few** মানে অল্প নয়, বরং বেশ কয়েকটা। 'Quite a few students failed' মানে অনেক ছাত্রই ফেল করেছে। একইভাবে 'not a few' মানেও বেশ কিছু। শব্দগুলো দেখতে অল্পের মতো, অর্থে উল্টো — খবরের কাগজ বা প্রতিবেদন পড়ার সময় এটা না জানলে গোটা বাক্যের মানে ভুল বোঝা হয়ে যায়। আরও কয়েকটা কাজের কথা। **few** বহুবচন, তাই তার সাথে verb বহুবচন বসে — 'Few students **were** present'; কিন্তু **little** একবচনের মতো চলে — 'Little **was** done'। **a little** আবার adjective বা adverb-এর আগেও বসতে পারে, তখন মানে 'একটু' — 'I am a little tired', 'Walk a little faster'; সেখানে **a few** বসে না। আর অনানুষ্ঠানিক কথায় few আর little-এর জায়গায় সাধারণত 'not many' ও 'not much' বলা হয় — 'I don't have many friends' শুনতে বেশি স্বাভাবিক লাগে, আর অর্থও একই। খাতায় লেখার সময় অবশ্য few আর little-ই বেশি পরিণত দেখায়, শুধু a-টা বসাবেন কি না, সেটা আগে ঠিক করে নিন।
