Word Formation in English: One Word, Four Forms
Word Formation (এক শব্দের চার রূপ)
Introductionভূমিকা
Most English words travel in families. Success is a noun, succeed is a verb, successful is an adjective and successfully is an adverb — one idea doing four different jobs. If you learn a word with its family instead of alone, every new word you meet gives you three or four more, and a blank in an exam paper stops being a guess.
ইংরেজির বেশির ভাগ শব্দ পরিবার ধরে চলে। success একটা noun, succeed verb, successful adjective, আর successfully adverb — একই ভাব, চারটা আলাদা কাজ। শব্দটাকে একা না শিখে পরিবারসহ শিখলে একটা শব্দ থেকেই আরও তিন-চারটা পাওয়া যায়, আর পরীক্ষার শূন্যস্থানটা আর অনুমানের ব্যাপার থাকে না।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Word formation is building new words from a base word by adding a suffix at the end or a prefix at the front. The suffix normally decides the word's job in the sentence — endings such as -ness, -tion and -ment make nouns, -ise and -en make verbs, -ful and -ous make adjectives, and -ly usually makes an adverb. The prefix normally changes the meaning instead, most often to its opposite.
Bangla Explanation
the, a, an, his, her, this-এর পরে জায়গাটা সাধারণত noun-এর — “his decision”, “the education of girls”; তবে শূন্যস্থানের পরেই যদি আরেকটা noun থাকে, তাহলে জায়গাটা adjective-এর — “the careful driver”। very, more, so-এর পরে adjective আর adverb দুটোই বসতে পারে, তাই শুধু very দেখে ঠিক করবেন না — দেখুন শব্দটা কাকে বর্ণনা করছে: noun-কে করলে adjective (“a very careful driver”), verb-কে করলে adverb (“he drives very carefully”)। কাজটা কীভাবে হলো বোঝাতে verb-এর পরে জায়গাটা adverb-এর — “he drives carefully”। আর must, should, can-এর পরে জায়গাটা verb-এর — “we must decide”; to-এর পরেও সাধারণত verb — “I want to succeed” (এখানে success বসবে না), তবে look forward to, used to, the key to-এর মতো জায়গায় to-এর পরে noun বা -ing রূপ বসে — “the key to success”, “I am looking forward to seeing you”। একটা কথা খুব সাবধানে মনে রাখবেন: -ly দেখলেই adverb ভেবে নেবেন না। friendly, lovely, lonely, silly, ugly — এগুলো শেষে -ly থাকলেও adjective। adverb তৈরি হয় adjective-এর সাথে -ly বসলে (quick → quickly, slow → slowly); কিন্তু friend, love-এর মতো noun-এর সাথে -ly বসলে যা তৈরি হয় সেটা adjective — friendly, lovely। তাই “He spoke to me friendly” ভুল; বলতে হবে “He spoke to me in a friendly way”।
Examplesউদাহরণ

- He is a careful driver, so his owner trusts him.সে সাবধানী চালক, তাই মালিক তাকে ভরসা করেন। (noun-এর আগে — adjective)
- One careless moment on the road can cost a life.রাস্তায় এক মুহূর্তের অসাবধানতা একটা জীবন কেড়ে নিতে পারে। (careless — adjective)
- The headmaster announced his decision on Sunday.প্রধান শিক্ষক রোববার তাঁর সিদ্ধান্ত জানালেন। (his-এর পরে — noun)

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
He drives very careful.
He drives very carefully.
Bangla marks the adverb inside the word itself — সাবধানে already means 'in a careful way' — so learners feel nothing is missing and leave the adjective where English needs the -ly form after a verb.
I want to success in life.
I want to succeed in life.
After 'to' English needs the verb. Bangla সফল হওয়া joins an adjective to হওয়া, so the noun/verb split never appears in the learner's first language.
He spoke to me friendly.
He spoke to me in a friendly way.
'Friendly' ends in -ly but is an adjective: -ly on an adjective makes an adverb (quick, quickly), while -ly on a noun such as 'friend' makes an adjective. There is no ordinary adverb 'friendlily'.
His answer was inlogical.
His answer was illogical.
Not every word takes in- for its negative — happy takes un-, honest takes dis- — so the prefix has to be learned with the word. But 'logical' does take in-, and in- changes shape with the letter after it: il- before l, ir- before r, im- before m and p, in- elsewhere.
The strongness of the current surprised us.
The strength of the current surprised us.
Not every adjective takes -ness. Strong becomes strength, deep becomes depth, wide becomes width — these families have to be checked, not guessed.
Tipsটিপস
- Keep four columns in your notebook — noun, verb, adjective, adverb — and fill in the whole family every time you meet a new word. — খাতায় চারটা কলাম রাখুন — noun, verb, adjective, adverb — নতুন শব্দ পেলেই পুরো পরিবারটা ভরে ফেলুন।
- Look at the words on both sides of the blank. 'The/a/his' before it means a noun — unless another noun follows it, and then it is an adjective. A full verb before it usually means an adverb. After 'very', ask what the word describes: a noun means an adjective, a verb means an adverb. — শূন্যস্থানের দুই পাশে তাকান। আগে the/a/his থাকলে noun — তবে পরেই আরেকটা noun থাকলে adjective। আগে পুরো একটা verb থাকলে সাধারণত adverb। আর very থাকলে দেখুন শব্দটা কাকে বর্ণনা করছে: noun-কে হলে adjective, verb-কে হলে adverb।
- -ly is not proof of an adverb: friendly, lovely, lonely, silly and ugly are adjectives. — -ly থাকলেই adverb নয়: friendly, lovely, lonely, silly, ugly — সবগুলোই adjective।
- The suffix changes the job; the prefix changes the meaning. Learn them as two separate tools. — Suffix বদলায় কাজ, prefix বদলায় অর্থ। দুটোকে আলাদা হাতিয়ার হিসেবেই শিখুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is word formation in English?
It is the process of making new words from a base word by adding a prefix at the front or a suffix at the end — care becomes careful, careless, carefully and carelessness. The base carries the meaning and the added part decides the word's job in the sentence, so one word you already know gives you three or four you can use immediately.
How do I know which form goes in the blank?
Ignore the meaning for a moment and read the words on either side of the gap. A determiner such as the, a, his or this in front means a noun belongs there — unless another noun follows the gap, in which case the gap describes that noun and takes an adjective: 'the careful driver'. A complete verb in front usually means an adverb. Must, should or can in front means the verb form is needed, and so does 'to' when it belongs to a verb such as want to or decide to — though after look forward to, used to and the key to, 'to' is followed by a noun or an -ing form. 'Very' settles nothing by itself, because it stands in front of adjectives and adverbs alike; ask whether the word describes a noun ('a very careful driver') or a verb ('he drives very carefully'). The grammar of the sentence, not the meaning of the word, decides the answer.
Do all adverbs end in -ly, and do all -ly words behave as adverbs?
Neither is true. Fast, hard, late and well are adverbs with no -ly at all — 'he drives fast', not 'fastly'. And friendly, lovely, lonely, silly and ugly end in -ly but work as adjectives: putting -ly on an adjective makes an adverb (quick, quickly), while putting it on a noun such as friend or love makes an adjective. When you want an adverb from one of those, use a phrase instead: in a friendly way.
What is the difference between a prefix and a suffix?
A prefix goes in front and changes the meaning — happy becomes unhappy, legal becomes illegal, use becomes misuse. A suffix goes at the end and usually changes the word class — happy becomes happiness, a noun. That is why negative questions in an exam are prefix questions and 'right form of word' questions are almost always suffix questions.
