Phrasal Verbs with Up: What the Particle Adds
Up দিয়ে Phrasal Verb (এই ছোট শব্দটা কী যোগ করে)
Introductionভূমিকা
In a phrasal verb, the small word after the verb is not decoration — it carries meaning of its own. 'Up' usually adds one of three ideas: finishing something completely (eat up, use up), increasing something (speed up, turn up), or moving or facing upward (stand up, pick up). Once you can hear those three, most new 'up' verbs stop being words you have to memorise blind.
Phrasal verb-এ verb-এর পরের ছোট শব্দটা সাজসজ্জা নয়, তার নিজের একটা মানে আছে। 'Up' সাধারণত তিনটার একটা যোগ করে: কাজটা পুরোপুরি শেষ করা (eat up, use up), বাড়ানো (speed up, turn up), অথবা উপরের দিকে যাওয়া (stand up, pick up)। এই তিনটে কান পেতে ধরতে পারলে নতুন 'up' verb-গুলো আর অন্ধভাবে মুখস্থ করার জিনিস থাকে না।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A phrasal verb is a verb plus a particle — up, out, off, on, down — which together mean something the verb alone does not. With 'up' the particle most often signals completion, increase or upward direction, though a small group such as give up, bring up and put up with have to be learned as whole units because their meaning cannot be worked out from the parts.
Verb-এর সাথে একটা particle — up, out, off, on, down — জুড়ে যে নতুন অর্থ তৈরি হয়, সেটাই phrasal verb; verb একা সেই অর্থ দেয় না। 'Up' বেশির ভাগ সময় বোঝায় সম্পূর্ণতা, বৃদ্ধি বা ঊর্ধ্বমুখী দিক। তবে give up, bring up, put up with-এর মতো কয়েকটাকে আস্ত ইউনিট হিসেবেই শিখতে হয়, কারণ টুকরো থেকে ওদের অর্থ বের করা যায় না।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
আগে তিনটে দল দেখে নিন, তাহলে অর্ধেকের বেশি 'up' verb এমনিতেই বোঝা যাবে। এক, পুরোপুরি শেষ: eat up (পুরোটা খেয়ে ফেলা), drink up, use up (ফুরিয়ে ফেলা), finish up, fill up (ভরে ফেলা), clean up (গুছিয়ে পরিষ্কার করা)। 'Eat your rice' মানে ভাতটা খাও; 'Eat up your rice' মানে পুরোটা শেষ করো — এই ছোট পার্থক্যটাই up-এর কাজ। দুই, বাড়ানো: speed up (গতি বাড়ানো), hurry up (তাড়াতাড়ি করা), turn up (আওয়াজ বাড়ানো), warm up, prices go up (দাম বাড়া), grow up (বড় হওয়া)। তিন, উপরের দিকে: stand up, get up, pick up (তুলে নেওয়া), look up (উপরে তাকানো), put up a poster (উপরে টাঙানো)। এবার সৎভাবে বলি, সব 'up' এই তিন দলে পড়ে না। কিছু আছে যেগুলো আস্ত মুখস্থ করা ছাড়া উপায় নেই: give up (হাল ছেড়ে দেওয়া), bring up (সন্তান মানুষ করা, বা কোনো প্রসঙ্গ তোলা), put up with (সহ্য করা), make up (বানিয়ে বলা, বা মিটমাট করা), set up (স্থাপন করা), turn up (হাজির হওয়া — খেয়াল করুন এটার আরেক অর্থ আওয়াজ বাড়ানো), show up, end up (শেষমেশ কোথাও গিয়ে দাঁড়ানো), come up with (বের করা, ভেবে বের করা), catch up (পিছিয়ে থেকে ধরে ফেলা), save up (জমানো), take up (কোনো কাজ বা শখ শুরু করা), look up (অভিধানে খুঁজে দেখা — এটাও তালিকার বাইরে)। এবার ব্যাকরণের অংশটা, যেটা ভুল হলে বাক্যটাই বেখাপ্পা হয়ে যায়। অনেক phrasal verb-এর মাঝখানে object বসানো যায়: 'turn on the light' আর 'turn the light on' — দুটোই ঠিক। কিন্তু object যদি সর্বনাম হয় — it, them, him, her, me — তখন মাঝখানেই বসাতে হবে, শেষে নয়: 'turn it on' ✓, 'turn on it' ✗; 'wake me up' ✓, 'wake up me' ✗। আবার তিন শব্দের phrasal verb কখনোই ভাঙা যায় না, object সবসময় শেষে: 'I can't put up with it' ✓, 'I can't put it up with' ✗। একই কথা come up with, look forward to-এর বেলাতেও। আর একটা ছোট ফাঁদ: কিছু verb-এর অর্থেই 'উপরে' ভাবটা আছে, তাই up বসালে বাড়তি হয়ে যায় — 'Prices are rising' ✓ বা 'Prices are going up' ✓, কিন্তু 'Prices are rising up' ✗।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Eat up your rice; the school van will be here in ten minutes.ভাতটুকু শেষ করে ফেলো; দশ মিনিটের মধ্যে স্কুলের গাড়ি এসে যাবে। (up = পুরোপুরি শেষ)
- Please speed up, or we will miss the last bus to Barishal.একটু তাড়াতাড়ি করো, নইলে বরিশালের শেষ বাসটা মিস করব। (up = বাড়ানো)
- Don't give up after one bad result.একটা খারাপ ফল দেখেই হাল ছেড়ে দিয়ো না। (আস্ত মুখস্থ করার একটা)
- My grandmother brought up seven children in that small house.আমার দাদি ওই ছোট বাড়িটাতেই সাত ছেলেমেয়ে মানুষ করেছেন। (bring up = মানুষ করা)
- I looked up the word in the dictionary before writing the answer.উত্তর লেখার আগে শব্দটা অভিধানে খুঁজে দেখেছি। (look up = খুঁজে দেখা)
- Rahim turned up an hour late for the tuition.রহিম টিউশনে এক ঘণ্টা দেরিতে হাজির হলো। (turn up = হাজির হওয়া)

- I cannot put up with this noise any longer.এই আওয়াজ আর সহ্য করতে পারছি না। (তিন শব্দের — কখনো ভাঙা যায় না)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Turn on it, the room is dark.
Turn it on, the room is dark.
When the object is a pronoun — it, them, him, her — a separable phrasal verb must be split and the pronoun placed in the middle. A full noun can go either side: 'turn on the light' and 'turn the light on' are both fine.
He gave up to smoke last Ramadan.
He gave up smoking last Ramadan.
After 'give up' the second verb takes -ing, not 'to'. Bangla ছেড়ে দেওয়া is followed by a verbal noun, but learners reach for the English infinitive by habit.
My uncle brought up in Barishal.
My uncle grew up in Barishal.
'Bring up' always needs an object — parents bring up a child. The child is the one who grows up. Bangla covers both sides with বড় হওয়া and মানুষ করা, so the two get exchanged.
I can't put it up with any more.
I can't put up with it any more.
Three-word phrasal verbs never split. The object always comes after the last particle, whether it is a noun or a pronoun.
Please wake up me at five for the train.
Please wake me up at five for the train.
Same pronoun rule: 'me' is a pronoun, so it goes between the verb and the particle.
Rice prices are rising up again.
Rice prices are rising again.
'Rise' already contains the upward meaning, so with prices the 'up' adds nothing. Use 'rise' alone or the phrasal verb 'go up'. ('Rise up' does exist, but it means to rebel: 'the people rose up against the ruler'.)
Tipsটিপস
- Before memorising a new 'up' verb, ask what 'up' is doing in it: finished, more, or upward. If none of the three fits, it is one of the ones you simply learn whole. — নতুন 'up' verb মুখস্থ করার আগে দেখুন up কী কাজ করছে: শেষ, বেশি, না উপরে। তিনটার একটাও না মিললে বুঝবেন এটা আস্ত মুখস্থ করার দলে।
- With a pronoun object, a phrasal verb that can be split must be split: pick it up, turn it on, wake me up, throw them away. The ones that never split, such as look after and get over, keep the pronoun at the end: look after him. — যে phrasal verb ভাঙা যায়, object সর্বনাম হলে সেটা ভাঙতেই হবে: pick it up, turn it on, wake me up, throw them away। আর look after, get over-এর মতো যেগুলো কখনো ভাঙে না, সেখানে সর্বনামও শেষেই বসে: look after him।
- Three-word phrasal verbs — put up with, come up with, look forward to — never split at all. — তিন শব্দের phrasal verb — put up with, come up with, look forward to — কখনো ভাঙে না।
- Learn each one inside a full sentence. 'Give up' cannot be worked out from 'give', so the sentence is what your memory will hold on to. — প্রতিটাকে একটা পুরো বাক্যের ভেতরে শিখুন। 'give' থেকে 'give up'-এর অর্থ বের করা যায় না, তাই বাক্যটাই মনে থাকবে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What does 'up' actually add to a phrasal verb?
Most often one of three things. It can mean completely, so that eating becomes eating all of it — eat up, use up, drink up. It can mean an increase — speed up, turn up the volume, prices go up. Or it can mean upward — stand up, pick up, look up at the sky. A smaller group, such as give up and put up with, has an idiomatic meaning that none of the three explains, and those have to be learned as fixed expressions.
When do I split a phrasal verb and when do I keep it together?
If the phrasal verb is separable and the object is an ordinary noun, both orders work: 'turn on the fan' and 'turn the fan on'. If the object is a pronoun, you must split it: 'turn it on', never 'turn on it'. Three-word phrasal verbs such as put up with and come up with are never split, no matter what the object is. And a few phrasal verbs take no object at all, so the question does not arise — 'She grew up in Khulna.'
Is 'look up' always about a dictionary?
No, and the two senses behave differently. 'Look up a word' means to search for information, and it is separable — 'look it up'. 'Look up' meaning to raise your eyes has no object at all: 'He looked up and saw the kite.' There is also 'look up to somebody', a three-word form meaning to respect them. Same two little words, three different jobs.
Are phrasal verbs too informal for exam writing?
They are ordinary English and they appear in speech, in newspapers and in most everyday writing. In a formal essay or an official letter, a single-word alternative can read better in places — postpone rather than put off, tolerate rather than put up with, establish rather than set up. The safe approach is to understand every phrasal verb you meet and to choose the more formal word only where the writing is genuinely formal.
