Homophones in English: Words That Sound the Same
Homophone (একই উচ্চারণ, আলাদা বানান)
Introductionভূমিকা
Homophones are words that sound identical but are spelled differently and mean different things — their and there, piece and peace, principal and principle. Your ear cannot separate them, so they have to be separated by meaning. That is why the mistake never shows up when you speak and always shows up when you write.
যেসব শব্দের উচ্চারণ হুবহু এক কিন্তু বানান আর অর্থ আলাদা, সেগুলোই homophone — their আর there, piece আর peace, principal আর principle। কান দিয়ে এদের আলাদা করা যায় না, অর্থ দিয়ে করতে হয়। এ কারণেই ভুলটা কথা বলার সময় ধরা পড়ে না, ধরা পড়ে লেখার সময়।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A homophone is a word that has the same pronunciation as another word but a different spelling and a different meaning. Homophones are a writing problem rather than a pronunciation problem, and a spell-checker will not catch them, because both spellings are real words.
যে শব্দের উচ্চারণ অন্য একটি শব্দের মতোই কিন্তু বানান ও অর্থ আলাদা, তাকে বলে homophone। এটা উচ্চারণের নয়, লেখার সমস্যা — আর কম্পিউটারের spell-checker এটা ধরতে পারে না, কারণ দুটো বানানই আসল শব্দ।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
সবচেয়ে ঝামেলার জোড়াগুলো আগে সেরে নিই, কারণ এগুলোই প্রতিদিনের লেখায় আসে। their, there, they're — their মানে 'তাদের' (their books), there মানে 'সেখানে' বা বাক্য শুরুর 'there is/are', আর they're মানে they are-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ। মনে রাখার সহজ উপায়: there-এর ভেতরেই here লুকিয়ে আছে, আর here মানে জায়গা — তাই জায়গা বোঝালে there। আর they're বসানোর আগে মনে মনে they are বসিয়ে দেখুন; বসলে ঠিক, না বসলে ভুল। ঠিক এই পরীক্ষাটাই your/you're আর its/it's-এর বেলাতেও খাটে: you're = you are, it's = it is। weather আর whether: weather আবহাওয়া, whether 'কি না' বোঝায় — 'whether he comes or not'। এবার ছোট কিন্তু দরকারি কয়েকটা: piece (টুকরো) আর peace (শান্তি), write (লেখা) আর right (ঠিক/ডান), flour (আটা) আর flower (ফুল), son (ছেলে) আর sun (সূর্য), buy (কেনা) আর by (দ্বারা), fare (ভাড়া) আর fair (মেলা, ন্যায্য), sea (সমুদ্র) আর see (দেখা), meat (মাংস) আর meet (দেখা করা), knew (জানত) আর new (নতুন)।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Their is a problem with the ceiling fan.
There is a problem with the ceiling fan.
'There is' is the fixed way English opens a sentence about something existing. 'Their' shows possession. The ear gives no warning at all, because the two are pronounced identically — only the meaning can tell you which one to write.
Your late again, and the class has started.
You're late again, and the class has started.
'You're' is short for 'you are'. Put the full form back into the sentence: if 'you are late' makes sense, the apostrophe form is the right one.
Our principle visited every classroom on the first day.
Our principal visited every classroom on the first day.
The head of a school is a person, and the word for a person ends in -pal. A principle is a rule or a belief and cannot walk into a classroom.
The car remained stationery in the middle of the road.
The car remained stationary in the middle of the road.
-ary means not moving; -ery is the shop that sells paper and pens. Remember the E in stationEry stands for Envelope.
Weather he comes or not, we will start at nine.
Whether he comes or not, we will start at nine.
'Whether' introduces a choice between possibilities; 'weather' is rain, heat and storms. They sound the same, so the meaning of the sentence is the only guide.
I will right a letter to the headmaster tomorrow.
I will write a letter to the headmaster tomorrow.
'Write' always involves putting words down; 'right' means correct or the opposite of left. The silent w in write is what makes them sound alike.
Tipsটিপস
- Test they're, you're and it's by expanding them: they are, you are, it is. If the full form does not fit the sentence, the word you need is the one without the apostrophe — their, your or its. (An apostrophe showing possession, as in Rahim's book, is a different thing and does not expand.) — they're, you're, it's পেলে ভেঙে দেখুন: they are, you are, it is। পুরো রূপটা বাক্যে না বসলে বুঝবেন apostrophe ছাড়া রূপটাই লাগবে — their, your, its। (Rahim's book-এর মতো মালিকানা বোঝানো apostrophe আলাদা জিনিস, ওটা ভাঙে না।)
- Use spelling hooks: the princiPAL is your pal; a princiPLE is a rule; stationEry has an E for Envelope; thERE has hERE inside it. — বানান মনে রাখার হুক: princiPAL মানে pal, princiPLE মানে rule; stationEry-তে E মানে Envelope; thERE-এর ভেতরে hERE।
- A spell-checker cannot help here, because both spellings are real words. Only your own reading will catch these. — এখানে spell-checker কাজে আসবে না, কারণ দুটো বানানই আসল শব্দ। নিজে পড়ে দেখা ছাড়া উপায় নেই।
- After finishing a written answer, read it once more looking only for these pairs. It takes a minute and saves the silliest marks. — লেখা শেষে আরেকবার শুধু এই জোড়াগুলো খুঁজতে খুঁজতে পড়ুন। এক মিনিটের কাজ, সবচেয়ে বোকা নম্বরগুলো বাঁচে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is a homophone?
A homophone is a word pronounced exactly like another word but written differently and meaning something else — sea and see, flour and flower, buy and by. Because the sound is identical, homophones cause no trouble in speech at all. They only appear as errors on paper, which is why they matter most in exams, applications and emails.
Why do homophones cause so much trouble in written English?
Because the usual way to check a word is to say it aloud, and saying these aloud proves nothing — both members of the pair sound the same. A spell-checker is no help either, since 'their' and 'there' are both correctly spelled words; the software cannot tell which one your sentence needed. The only reliable check is to know what each word means and to reread with these pairs in mind.
Are homophones and homonyms the same thing?
No. Homophones sound the same but are spelled differently, like piece and peace. Homographs are spelled the same but may be read differently, like 'lead' the metal and 'lead' meaning to guide. Homonyms are words that are both spelled and pronounced the same while meaning different things, like 'bank' for a river's edge and 'bank' where you keep money.
Which homophone pairs should I learn first?
The ones that turn up in ordinary sentences several times a day: their, there and they're; your and you're; its and it's; to, too and two. Get those four groups right and most of your written errors disappear. After that, learn the pairs that belong to school and office writing — principal and principle, stationary and stationery, weather and whether, fare and fair.
