Sports vocabulary is the set of words we use for games, players, places and actions: team, referee, score, tournament, coach and so on. Knowing them helps you follow commentary and chat about matches.
Sports vocabulary মানে খেলাধুলার সাথে জড়িত শব্দগুলো — team, referee, score, tournament, coach ইত্যাদি। এগুলো জানলে ধারাভাষ্য বুঝতে ও ম্যাচ নিয়ে গল্প করতে সুবিধা হয়।

খেলার শব্দগুলো মনে রাখার সহজ উপায় হলো ভাগ করে শেখা। মানুষ: player (খেলোয়াড়), referee (রেফারি), coach (কোচ), captain (অধিনায়ক)। জায়গা: stadium (স্টেডিয়াম), pitch/field (মাঠ), ground (মাঠ)। ঘটনা: match (খেলা), tournament (টুর্নামেন্ট), score (স্কোর), goal (গোল)। মনে রাখবেন — আমরা বলি “play cricket”, “play football” (article ছাড়া), কিন্তু “play the guitar” (article সহ)। আর জেতা-হারা বোঝাতে win (জেতা), lose (হারা), draw (ড্র/সমতা) ব্যবহার হয়।

- Score — the number of points or goals: What was the final score of the match?স্কোর — পয়েন্ট বা গোলের সংখ্যা। ম্যাচের শেষ স্কোর কত ছিল?
- Spectator — a person who watches a game: Thousands of spectators filled the stadium.দর্শক — যিনি খেলা দেখেন। হাজার হাজার দর্শক স্টেডিয়াম ভরিয়ে দিয়েছিল।
- Draw — a game that ends with equal scores: The football match ended in a draw.ড্র — সমান স্কোরে শেষ হওয়া খেলা। ফুটবল ম্যাচটি ড্র-তে শেষ হয়েছে।
- Opponent — the person or team you play against: Our opponents were much stronger this year.প্রতিপক্ষ — যার বিরুদ্ধে খেলা হয়। এবছর আমাদের প্রতিপক্ষ অনেক শক্তিশালী ছিল।
- Coach — the person who trains a team: The coach told the players to defend well.কোচ — যিনি দলকে প্রশিক্ষণ দেন। কোচ খেলোয়াড়দের ভালোভাবে রক্ষণ সামলাতে বললেন।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
We won the match with 3 goals to 1.
We won the match by 3 goals to 1.
For a winning margin we say 'win by', not 'win with' (win by two runs, by three goals).
He is a good sportsman because he plays the cricket.
He is a good sportsman because he plays cricket.
Names of sports take no article: play cricket, play football — but 'play the guitar' does.
Our team loosed the final.
Our team lost the final.
'Lose' (to not win) is different from 'loose' (not tight). The past of lose is 'lost'.
The two players had a match against themselves.
The two players had a match against each other.
Use 'each other' for two sides facing off; 'themselves' means acting on their own.

Do we use 'the' before the names of sports?
No. We say 'play cricket', 'play football', 'play tennis' with no article. Articles are used with instruments (play the guitar), not with sports.
What is the difference between 'win' and 'beat'?
