In Bangla you পরীক্ষা দাও — you give an exam. In English the person who gives the exam is the teacher; the student takes it, or sits for it. That one reversed verb goes onto CVs, university application forms and emails to foreign admissions offices every year: “I gave my HSC exam in 2023.” The reader understands, and also notices. Education vocabulary is worth getting exactly right, because this is the vocabulary you use about yourself.
বাংলায় আমরা পরীক্ষা “দিই”। ইংরেজিতে পরীক্ষা দেন শিক্ষক; ছাত্র পরীক্ষা “নেয়” — take an exam, বা sit for an exam। উল্টে যাওয়া এই একটা ক্রিয়া প্রতি বছর সিভিতে, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আবেদন ফরমে আর বিদেশি ভর্তি অফিসে পাঠানো ইমেইলে গিয়ে ওঠে: “I gave my HSC exam in 2023.” পাঠক বুঝে ফেলেন, আবার লক্ষও করেন। শিক্ষা নিয়ে শব্দগুলো নির্ভুল করা দরকার, কারণ এই শব্দগুলো দিয়েই আপনি নিজের কথা বলেন।

Education vocabulary covers three areas: the institutions and stages (school, college, university, undergraduate, postgraduate), the work (syllabus, assignment, revise, submit, research) and the assessment (take an exam, pass, fail, retake, result, grade). Each area has its own fixed verbs, and those verbs are where the marks are lost.
শিক্ষার শব্দভান্ডার তিন এলাকায় ভাগ: প্রতিষ্ঠান ও ধাপ (school, college, university, undergraduate, postgraduate), পড়াশোনার কাজ (syllabus, assignment, revise, submit, research) আর মূল্যায়ন (take an exam, pass, fail, retake, result, grade)। প্রত্যেক এলাকার নিজস্ব বাঁধা verb আছে, আর নম্বর হারায় ঠিক ওই verb-গুলোতেই।

পরীক্ষা নিয়ে বলার সময় ইংরেজি verb গুলো একবার ঠিক করে নিলে সারা জীবন কাজে লাগবে: take an exam বা sit for an exam (পরীক্ষা দেওয়া), pass an exam (পাশ করা), fail an exam (ফেল করা), retake বা resit (আবার দেওয়া), appear for an exam (অংশ নেওয়া, একটু আনুষ্ঠানিক), get the result (ফল পাওয়া), score 80 marks বা get a GPA of 5 (নম্বর পাওয়া)। খেয়াল করুন — শিক্ষক set the exam করেন, invigilate করেন, আর marks দেন; ছাত্র take করে। বাংলার “পরীক্ষা দেওয়া” থেকে “give an exam” লিখে ফেলাটা এত স্বাভাবিক যে অনেক শিক্ষকও ভুলটা ধরিয়ে দেন না, কিন্তু বিদেশি পাঠকের চোখে এটা সাথে সাথে ধরা পড়ে। দ্বিতীয়ত, কয়েকটা শব্দ এখানে যে অর্থে চলে, বাইরে সেই অর্থে চলে না। “Tuition” এখানে মানে প্রাইভেট পড়ানো; ব্রিটিশ-আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে tuition মানে পড়ানোর কাজ বা পড়ার ফি (tuition fees), আর প্রাইভেট পড়ানোকে বলে private tutoring, শিক্ষককে বলে a private tutor। “Do graduation” বলা হয় না — বলুন graduate from a college, বা I completed my bachelor's degree। “Give admission” নয়, get admission বা be admitted to, আর ভর্তি পরীক্ষাকে বলে an admission test বা entrance exam। “Standard six” নয়, class six বা grade six। আর “batchmate” শব্দটা বোঝা যায়, তবে আন্তর্জাতিক ইংরেজিতে বেশি চলে classmate বা coursemate। তৃতীয়ত, uncountable শব্দগুলো — এখানেই খাতায় সবচেয়ে বেশি লাল কালি পড়ে। Homework, information, advice, research, knowledge, progress, feedback — এদের পিছনে কখনো -s বসে না, আর সামনে a বসে না। তাই “many homeworks” নয়, “a lot of homework”; “I did two researches” নয়, “I did two research projects” বা “I conducted research”। আর ইংরেজি ভাষায় নিজের পড়াশোনার কথা লেখার সময় দুটো বাক্যছাঁচ হাতে রাখুন, কারণ সিভি আর আবেদনপত্রে বারবার লাগবে: “I completed my HSC at Notre Dame College in 2023 with a GPA of 5.00” আর “I am currently in my third year of a bachelor's degree in Economics at Dhaka University”। ছাঁচটা ঠিক থাকলে শুধু নাম আর সাল বদলে দিলেই যেকোনো ফরমে বসে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
I gave my exam yesterday.
I took (or sat for) my exam yesterday.
Students 'take' or 'sit for' an exam; a teacher 'gives' or 'sets' it. 'Give an exam' is a common Bangla-to-English slip.
The teacher gave us many homeworks.
The teacher gave us a lot of homework.
'Homework' is uncountable, so there is no plural 'homeworks'. Use 'a lot of homework' or 'some homework'.
I want to do graduation from this college.
I want to graduate from this college.
'Graduate' is a verb here; 'do graduation' is not standard English. Use 'graduate from + institution'.

Do students 'give' or 'take' an exam in English?
