Bangla nasal vowels: the চন্দ্রবিন্দু
The mark ঁ (চন্দ্রবিন্দু) means the vowel is said through the nose. English has nasal consonants but no nasal vowels, so learners drop it — and কাঁদা (kãda, to cry) becomes কাদা (kada, mud).
Where the tongue goes
Say a long আ. Now, without changing your mouth at all, let the air also go through your nose — pinch your nostrils and the sound should change. If pinching makes no difference, the vowel is not yet nasal. French *bon* and Hindi *हाँ* use the same trick.
Now say these
Slowly first. Speed only after three faultless repetitions.
- চাঁদের আলোয় কাঁদা পায়ে হাঁটি।I walk on muddy feet in the moonlight.
- হাঁস কাঁদে, বাঁশ বাঁকে, চাঁদ হাসে।The duck cries, the bamboo bends, the moon smiles.
- কাঁচা আমে দাঁত টকায়, পাঁচ ভাই হাঁ করে।Raw mango sets the teeth on edge; five brothers gape.
- বাঁধের ধারে বাঁশি বাজে।A flute plays beside the embankment.
- শাঁখ বাজে, চাঁদ ওঠে, হাঁটি হাঁটি পা পা।The conch sounds, the moon rises, step by little step.
The pair that goes wrong
কাদা when you mean কাঁদা.কাঁদা = to cry; কাদা = mud.The two words differ only by nasality, and dropping the nasal is the single most common thing English speakers do to Bangla vowels.
