How to Overcome the Fear of Speaking English
How to Overcome the Fear of Speaking English (ইংরেজি বলার ভয় কাটানোর উপায়)
Introductionভূমিকা
The fear is rarely about English. It is about the twenty people in the room and what they will think when you say something wrong. Ask anyone in Bangladesh who freezes in an interview — they can write the sentence perfectly on paper. The mouth is not the problem; the audience is.
ভয়টা আসলে ইংরেজিকে নিয়ে নয়। ভয়টা ঘরের বিশজন মানুষকে নিয়ে — ভুল বললে তারা কী ভাববে। বাংলাদেশে যে কেউ ইন্টারভিউতে আটকে যান, তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন — কাগজে ঠিক বাক্যটা লিখে দিতে পারবেন। মুখ সমস্যা নয়, শ্রোতাই সমস্যা।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Speaking anxiety is the gap between what you can produce alone and what you can produce while being watched. Closing that gap is a matter of exposure in small, safe doses — not of learning more grammar.
কথা বলার ভয় হলো একা যা পারেন আর কেউ দেখলে যা পারেন — এই দুইয়ের ফারাক। এই ফারাক কমে ছোট ছোট নিরাপদ মাত্রায় অভ্যাস করে, আরও ব্যাকরণ শিখে নয়।
Bangla Explanation
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Sorry, my English is not so good, but I will try.দুঃখিত, আমার ইংরেজি খুব ভালো না, তবু চেষ্টা করছি। (একবার বলে দিলে চাপ অর্ধেক কমে যায়)
- Give me a moment, I'm finding the word.একটু সময় দিন, শব্দটা খুঁজছি।
- Is this the right word — 'appointment'?শব্দটা কি ঠিক — 'appointment'? (জিজ্ঞেস করা দুর্বলতা নয়, দক্ষতা)
- I understand you, but speaking is harder for me.আপনার কথা বুঝি, কিন্তু বলাটা আমার জন্য কঠিন।
- Can we speak a little slowly?একটু ধীরে বলা যাবে?
- I made a mistake — let me say it again.ভুল হয়ে গেছে — আবার বলছি। (ভুল স্বীকার করে চালিয়ে যাওয়াই আত্মবিশ্বাসের চিহ্ন)
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Apologising for your English three times in one conversation.
Saying it once at the start, then getting on with it.
Repeated apologies make the listener focus on your English instead of your message — the opposite of what you want.
Practising only in front of people you want to impress.
Practising first where a mistake costs nothing.
High stakes plus low practice produces the freeze. Build the habit somewhere safe first.
Preparing a whole speech word for word and memorising it.
Preparing five key points and speaking around them.
Memorised text collapses the moment you lose one line, and it sounds recited. Points survive interruption.
Believing everyone noticed your mistake.
Assuming nobody remembers it by tomorrow.
People are far more occupied with their own performance than with yours. This is worth genuinely believing, because it is true.
Tipsটিপস
- Order tea in English at a shop where nobody knows you. Low risk, real practice. — অচেনা দোকানে ইংরেজিতে চা চান। ঝুঁকি কম, অনুশীলন আসল।
- Before a nerve-wracking conversation, say your first two sentences out loud in private. — ভয়ের কোনো কথোপকথনের আগে প্রথম দুটো বাক্য একা জোরে বলে নিন।
- Keep three 'time-buying' phrases ready. Silence feels much longer to you than to the listener. — তিনটা 'সময় নেওয়ার' বাক্য তৈরি রাখুন। নীরবতা শ্রোতার চেয়ে আপনার কাছে অনেক লম্বা মনে হয়।
- Count how many times you spoke this week, not how many mistakes you made. — এই সপ্তাহে কতবার বলেছেন সেটা গুনুন, কতটা ভুল করেছেন সেটা নয়।

Why can I write English well but not speak it?
Writing gives you time to check and rewrite; speaking does not. They are separate skills with separate practice. Reading and writing more will not, on its own, make you speak.
People laughed at my English once and I stopped. What now?
That memory is doing more damage than the original moment did. Restart somewhere those people are not — a stranger, an online partner, your own voice recording — and rebuild from there.
Will speaking practice with another Bangladeshi teach me wrong English?
Slightly, and it matters far less than the fluency you gain. Mix it with listening to native audio and the habit stays while the errors get corrected.
How long before the fear goes away?
For most learners it fades noticeably within a month of daily speaking, and it never disappears completely — even confident speakers feel it before a big presentation. The goal is to speak with it, not without it.
