Fact vs Opinion in Reading
লেখায় Fact আর Opinion আলাদা করা
Introductionভূমিকা
A fact is a statement somebody else could check; an opinion is a judgement they could only agree or disagree with. 'The bridge opened in 2022' is a fact — you can look it up. 'The bridge is the best thing that happened to the district' is an opinion, and no amount of checking will settle it. Comprehension questions turn on this difference often, and so do the wrong options in a multiple-choice item.
Fact হলো এমন কথা যা অন্য কেউ যাচাই করতে পারে; opinion হলো এমন বিচার যার সঙ্গে কেবল একমত বা দ্বিমত হওয়া যায়। 'The bridge opened in 2022' — এটি fact, দেখে নেওয়া যায়। 'The bridge is the best thing that happened to the district' — এটি opinion, যতই খোঁজ করুন মীমাংসা হবে না। Comprehension প্রশ্নে এই পার্থক্যটির উপর প্রায়ই নম্বর ঝুলে থাকে, আর MCQ-র ভুল option-গুলোও প্রায়ই এখান থেকেই আসে।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A fact is a statement that can be checked against evidence — a date, a number, an event. An opinion is a statement of judgement, belief or preference, which cannot be checked, only argued about. Whether a factual statement is actually correct is a separate question.
Fact হলো এমন বক্তব্য যা প্রমাণ দিয়ে যাচাই করা যায় — তারিখ, সংখ্যা, ঘটনা। Opinion হলো বিচার, বিশ্বাস বা পছন্দের বক্তব্য, যা যাচাই করা যায় না, কেবল তর্ক করা যায়। ওই fact-টি আসলে ঠিক কি না, সেটি সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা প্রশ্ন।
Bangla Explanation
দুই, উচিত-বাচক modal — should, must, ought to। 'The government should build more schools' — এটি লেখকের সুপারিশ, তথ্য নয়। Modal verb-গুলো ব্যাকরণের তালিকা হিসেবে মুখস্থ হয়ে যায় বলে পড়ার সময় এদের অর্থটা প্রায়ই চোখ এড়িয়ে যায়, অথচ লেখকের মত ধরা পড়ে ঠিক এখানেই। তিন, বিশ্বাস বা দাবির ক্রিয়া — think, believe, feel, argue, claim, suggest। চার, অনিশ্চয়তার শব্দ — probably, perhaps, it seems, apparently। পাঁচ, মাপকাঠি ছাড়া তুলনা — 'a better plan', 'too expensive'; কার তুলনায়, কত টাকায় বেশি — বলা নেই, তাই বিচার। এবার একটা সূক্ষ্ম কিন্তু জরুরি ব্যাপার: কারও মত উদ্ধৃত হলে সেটি দুই স্তরের কথা হয়ে যায়। 'The mayor said the drainage work was excellent' — মেয়র কথাটা বলেছেন, এটি fact; কাজটি চমৎকার, এটি তাঁর opinion। প্রশ্নে 'According to the mayor' থাকলে উত্তর হবে তাঁর মত, আর 'According to the passage' থাকলে উত্তর হবে যা লেখা আছে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Fact: 'The school has four hundred students.' — countable, checkable.সংখ্যা গোনা যায়, তাই fact।
- Opinion: 'The school is the best in the upazila.' — a judgement, not a measurement.'সেরা' মাপার কিছু নেই — এটি বিচার, তাই opinion।
- Fact (even if wrong): 'The river is two kilometres wide here.' — it can be measured.সংখ্যাটা ভুল হলেও কথাটি fact ধরনের, কারণ মেপে দেখা যায়।
- Opinion: 'The government should widen the road before Eid.' — 'should' is a recommendation.'should' মানে লেখকের সুপারিশ — তথ্য নয়।
- Fact: 'It is a three-storey building.' — an adjective, but a checkable one.বিশেষণ হলেও যাচাইযোগ্য — তাই fact, opinion নয়।
- Two layers: 'The headmaster said the new library was excellent.' — that he said it is fact; 'excellent' is his opinion.তিনি বলেছেন — fact; 'চমৎকার' — তাঁর opinion। দুটোকে আলাদা রাখুন।
- Opinion: 'The fare is too high.' — too high compared with what? No measure is given.'বেশি' — কার তুলনায়? মাপকাঠি নেই, তাই বিচার।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Marking 'It is a red double-decker bus' as an opinion because it has adjectives.
Marking it as a fact — the adjectives describe, they do not judge.
Adjectives are taught as 'describing words', so all of them look like opinion. Only evaluative ones — best, terrible, beautiful — carry a judgement; colour, size and number can be checked.
Reading past 'should' and 'must' as ordinary verbs.
Reading them as the writer's recommendation, and therefore as opinion.
Modals are usually learnt as a grammar list rather than as meaning, so their force slips by in reading — and that force is often the only place the writer's view appears.
Treating every sentence in a newspaper report as a fact.
Separating what happened from what someone said about it.
A report can quote an opinion accurately. That the person said it is a fact; what they said may still be pure judgement.
Answering 'What does the writer think of the new market?' with the number of shops in it.
Answering with the judgement the writer makes about it.
A question that asks for a view wants the evaluative sentence, not the data beside it. Note that 'according to the writer' is not that question — it usually means only 'as the passage states', and a number can be exactly the right answer to it.
Choosing an MCQ option that praises or criticises when the passage never did.
Choosing the option the passage's own wording supports.
An evaluative option that sounds reasonable is the standard distractor, because a reader supplies the judgement the passage withheld.
Tipsটিপস
- Ask one question of every sentence: could somebody check this? — প্রতিটি বাক্যকে একটাই প্রশ্ন করুন — এটা কি কেউ যাচাই করতে পারবে?
- Remember that a fact can be wrong. Checkable, not correct, is the test. — মনে রাখুন, fact ভুলও হতে পারে — পরীক্ষাটা 'যাচাইযোগ্য কি না', 'ঠিক কি না' নয়।
- Circle should, must, best, probably, seems and think as you read. They mark the writer's view. — পড়ার সময় should, must, best, probably, seems, think — এগুলো গোল করে রাখুন; লেখকের মত এখানেই থাকে।
- When an opinion is quoted, note whose it is. The exam often asks exactly that. — কোনো মত উদ্ধৃত হলে সেটি কার, লিখে রাখুন — পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই ঠিক এটাই জানতে চাওয়া হয়।
- Compare a news report and an editorial on the same event. The difference is the lesson. — একই ঘটনার রিপোর্ট আর সম্পাদকীয় পাশাপাশি পড়ুন — পার্থক্যটাই শিক্ষা।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between a fact and an opinion in a passage?
A fact can be checked against evidence — a date, a number, an event. An opinion is a judgement or belief that can only be agreed with or argued against. The test is whether checking is possible, not whether the statement is correct.
Can a fact be wrong?
Yes. 'The bridge is ten kilometres long' is a factual statement even if the real figure is different, because it is the kind of claim evidence can settle. An opinion cannot be wrong in that way — it can only be disagreed with.
Are all adjectives opinion words?
No. Only evaluative adjectives — best, terrible, beautiful, boring — signal opinion. Adjectives of colour, size, number and material describe something checkable, so 'a red three-storey building' is entirely factual.
Why does fact and opinion matter in comprehension questions?
Because many wrong options are opinions the passage never expressed. Watch the stem: 'according to the passage' and 'according to the writer' both ask for what is stated, while words like think, believe, feel, suggest or attitude are what mark a question about the writer's view.
