Some English words look nothing like they sound. Words such as comfortable, Wednesday and colonel trip up even confident speakers because English hides silent letters and squeezes syllables together. This guide shows you how the hardest words really sound.
কিছু ইংরেজি শব্দ দেখতে এক রকম, শোনায় আরেক রকম। comfortable, Wednesday, colonel-এর মতো শব্দ ভালো ইংরেজি জানা মানুষকেও আটকে দেয়, কারণ ইংরেজিতে অনেক অক্ষর নীরব (silent) থাকে আর syllable চেপে ছোট হয়ে যায়। এই লেখায় দেখবেন কঠিন শব্দগুলো আসলে কেমন শোনায়।

A 'difficult' word is usually one with silent letters (the b in comb), an unexpected stress, or fewer spoken syllables than written ones (chocolate is said in two beats, not three).
'কঠিন' শব্দ বলতে সাধারণত বোঝায় এমন শব্দ যেখানে নীরব অক্ষর থাকে (comb-এর b), stress অপ্রত্যাশিত জায়গায় পড়ে, অথবা লেখার চেয়ে বলার syllable কম হয় (chocolate তিন নয়, দুই beat-এ বলা হয়)।

প্রথম নিয়ম: প্রতিটি অক্ষর আলাদা করে উচ্চারণ করবেন না। ইংরেজিতে অনেক অক্ষর silent — Wednesday-তে প্রথম d, island-এ s, receipt-এ p, comb-এ b নীরব। দ্বিতীয় নিয়ম: প্রতিটি শব্দে একটি stressed syllable থাকে যেটি জোরে ও লম্বা করে বলতে হয়, বাকি অংশ দ্রুত ও হালকা করে বলুন — যেমন comfortable = KUMF-ter-bul (মাঝের for চেপে যায়)। তৃতীয় নিয়ম: লম্বা শব্দকে ছোট অংশে ভাগ করে ধীরে ধীরে জোড়া লাগান। বাংলায় আমরা প্রতিটি অক্ষর স্পষ্ট বলি, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে দুর্বল syllable গিলে ফেলা স্বাভাবিক — এটাই স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজি শোনায়।

Why do difficult English words have silent letters?
