Television is a device that receives moving pictures and sound broadcast from a distance, and for two generations it was the most powerful medium in the world. It still reaches homes the internet does not. Its uses are many. It informs: a cyclone warning broadcast on television reaches coastal villages faster than any other channel, and during the pandemic it carried school lessons to children with no device of their own. It educates through documentaries, agricultural programmes and language teaching. It entertains a family together, which a phone never does, and it has kept our dramas, songs and cricket in a shared national conversation. It also has costs. Children who watch for hours read less, move less and sleep worse. Advertisements teach a child to want things his parents cannot buy. Some channels report rumour as news, and a viewer with no other source believes it. Watching replaces conversation in many homes, and a family can sit together all evening without speaking. The remedy is not to remove the set but to choose: a fixed number of hours, programmes selected rather than whatever is on, and the television switched off during meals.
