Personal hygiene means the daily care a person takes of his own body and surroundings in order to stay healthy. It sounds like a small subject and it is not. Most of the illnesses that fill our hospitals — diarrhoea, typhoid, jaundice, worms, skin disease — do not need expensive treatment; they need not to have happened. The habits are simple and cheap. Washing hands with soap after using the toilet and before eating prevents more disease than any medicine cures. Drinking water that has been boiled or properly filtered, keeping food covered against flies, bathing daily, cutting nails, brushing teeth twice, and wearing clean clothes cost almost nothing. Keeping the house and the yard clean matters just as much, because water standing in a pot or a discarded tyre is where the mosquito that carries dengue breeds. Schools are the right place to teach this, and a school with no soap at its basin is teaching the opposite of what it says. Hygiene is not a matter of being fussy. It is the cheapest health care available in this country, and it is the only kind that a poor family can afford entirely on its own.
