Model Paragraph (182 words)
Pahela Baishakh is the first day of the Bengali year and the biggest national festival of Bangladesh, celebrated by people of every religion. It falls on the fourteenth of April. The day begins before sunrise at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka, where Chhayanaut singers greet the year with 'Esho he Baishakh', a programme broadcast across the country. Later in the morning students of the Faculty of Fine Arts lead the Mangal Shobhajatra, a procession of huge masks and paper animals that has been recognised by UNESCO as part of world heritage. Men wear panjabi and women white saris with red borders, and everyone eats panta bhat with fried hilsa, though the fish is far too expensive by mid-April. Baishakhi melas are held in towns and villages with toys, sweets, pottery, nagordola and folk songs. Shopkeepers open a halkhata, closing the old year's accounts and offering sweets to their customers, some of whom pay their dues that day. What makes this festival important is that it belongs to no religion. It is the one day when being Bengali is the only thing being celebrated.

- Why is it on 14 April and not 15?
- Bangladesh follows the revised Bengali calendar, which fixes the date at 14 April. West Bengal often observes 15 April. One clause on this shows real knowledge.
- What is Mangal Shobhajatra?
- The procession of large masks and figures led by Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts, listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Naming it is worth more than a sentence about 'colourful programmes'.
- What is halkhata?
- The shopkeepers' custom of opening a new account book, settling the old year's dues and offering sweets to customers. Very few answers include it, which is exactly why it is worth including.
