My Hobby Paragraph

A hobby is something a person does regularly for pleasure in his free time, not for money or marks. Mine is gardening. It began three years ago when my grandmother gave me a rose cutting and told me it would die if I forgot it for a week. It did not die. Now the strip of ground behind our house holds roses, marigolds, a hibiscus, two chilli plants, tomatoes in the winter and a lemon tree that has finally begun to fruit. I work there for about half an hour every evening, watering, loosening the soil, pulling weeds and cutting away what is dead. Gardening has taught me things my books do not. Nothing in a garden can be hurried; a seed takes the time it takes, however impatient I am. Something dies every season and it is usually my own carelessness. And a small daily effort produces far more than an occasional burst of enthusiasm — which is exactly true of study as well. It costs almost nothing, it keeps me outdoors and away from a screen, and my mother now cooks with chillies I grew myself.
