Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and one of the largest cities in the world, standing on the bank of the Buriganga. It is an old city. It was the capital of Bengal under the Mughals in the seventeenth century, when it was famous for muslin, and buildings from that time still stand at Lalbagh, Ahsan Manzil and the Star Mosque. Today it is the centre of everything: government, courts, universities, hospitals with specialists, banks, newspapers and most of the garment industry. That is why people keep arriving. Every year hundreds of thousands come from the districts looking for work, many after losing land to a river, and the city has never been built to hold them. The result is a capital of extremes. A few kilometres separate air-conditioned towers from settlements with no drainage. Traffic moves at the speed of walking, the air is among the worst measured anywhere, the Buriganga beside it is biologically dead, and an hour of rain floods the streets. Yet the city works, after a fashion, and a great many families have climbed out of poverty inside it. Dhaka is not a comfortable place; it is the place where this country's chances are.

ঢাকা বাংলাদেশের রাজধানী এবং পৃথিবীর অন্যতম বৃহৎ শহর, দাঁড়িয়ে আছে বুড়িগঙ্গার তীরে। এটি পুরোনো শহর। সপ্তদশ শতকে মুঘল আমলে এটি ছিল বাংলার রাজধানী, তখন মসলিনের জন্য বিখ্যাত; সেই সময়ের ভবন এখনো দাঁড়িয়ে আছে লালবাগ, আহসান মঞ্জিল ও তারা মসজিদে। আজ এটি সবকিছুরই কেন্দ্র — সরকার, আদালত, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, বিশেষজ্ঞ চিকিৎসকসহ হাসপাতাল, ব্যাংক, সংবাদপত্র আর পোশাকশিল্পের বড় অংশ। এ কারণেই মানুষ আসতেই থাকে: প্রতি বছর লাখো মানুষ জেলা থেকে কাজের খোঁজে আসেন, অনেকে নদীতে জমি হারিয়ে — আর শহরটা কখনোই তাঁদের ধারণ করার মতো করে গড়া হয়নি। ফল হলো চরমের এক রাজধানী: কয়েক কিলোমিটারের ব্যবধানে শীতাতপ নিয়ন্ত্রিত টাওয়ার আর নিষ্কাশনহীন বস্তি।

কেবল সমস্যার তালিকা লিখলে উত্তরটা অভিযোগ হয়ে যায়। ক্রম: (১) কী ও কোথায়; (২) **ইতিহাস** — মুঘল রাজধানী, মসলিন, লালবাগ ও আহসান মঞ্জিল; এই অংশটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না; (৩) আজ কেন কেন্দ্র — সরকার, শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য, শিল্প; (৪) **কেন মানুষ আসে** — কাজ, নদীভাঙন; (৫) সমস্যা — যানজট, বাতাস, বুড়িগঙ্গা, জলাবদ্ধতা, বৈষম্য; (৬) **ভারসাম্য** — তবু বহু পরিবার এখানেই দারিদ্র্য থেকে উঠে এসেছে। শেষ বাক্য: ঢাকা আরামের জায়গা নয়, এটা সেই জায়গা যেখানে এ দেশের সুযোগগুলো আছে। এই ভারসাম্যটাই উত্তরকে পরিণত করে।
