A Farmer Paragraph

A farmer is a person who cultivates land and rears animals, and almost half our people still live this way. He rises before dawn, says his prayers, and is in his field before the heat begins, usually with a spade over his shoulder and his lunch tied in a cloth. His year follows the crop rather than the calendar. He ploughs and prepares the land, sows the seed, transplants the seedlings in ankle-deep water, weeds, irrigates, applies fertiliser, watches the sky, and finally harvests and threshes. His wife works as hard as he does — drying and storing the grain, keeping the poultry and the cattle, and cooking for the labourers at harvest. Most farmers own very little land, and many farm somebody else's for a share of the crop. Seed, fertiliser and diesel cost more each year while the price of paddy often falls at exactly the moment he has to sell, because he cannot wait and the trader can. A flood, a cyclone or a pest can take a whole season. He feeds a country of a hundred and seventy million people and is usually the last person in it to eat well.

কৃষক হলেন সেই মানুষ, যিনি জমি চাষ করেন ও পশুপালন করেন — আমাদের প্রায় অর্ধেক মানুষ এখনো এভাবেই বাঁচেন। ভোরের আগে ওঠেন, নামাজ পড়েন, গরম শুরু হওয়ার আগেই মাঠে যান — কাঁধে কোদাল, কাপড়ে বাঁধা দুপুরের খাবার। তাঁর বছর চলে পঞ্জিকা নয়, ফসলের হিসাবে: জমি চষা ও তৈরি করা, বীজ বোনা, গোড়ালি-ডোবা পানিতে চারা রোপণ, আগাছা তোলা, সেচ, সার দেওয়া, আকাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকা, আর শেষে কাটা ও মাড়াই। তাঁর স্ত্রীও সমান পরিশ্রম করেন — ধান শুকানো ও গোলায় তোলা, হাঁস-মুরগি ও গরু দেখা, আর ফসলের সময় মজুরদের রান্না করা। বেশিরভাগ কৃষকের জমি খুব সামান্য, অনেকে ফসলের ভাগের বিনিময়ে অন্যের জমি চাষ করেন।

গড় উত্তর লেখে 'কৃষক আমাদের অন্নদাতা, কিন্তু তিনি দরিদ্র'। শক্তিশালী উত্তর দেখায় **তিনি আসলে কী কী করেন** — চষা, বোনা, রোপণ, আগাছা, সেচ, সার, কাটা, মাড়াই। এই ক্রিয়াগুলোই বিষয়ভিত্তিক শব্দভান্ডার, আর পরীক্ষক তা লক্ষ করেন। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা ও কত মানুষ; (২) তাঁর দিন; (৩) **ফসলচক্র ধরে তাঁর বছর**; (৪) **স্ত্রীর শ্রম** — প্রায় কোনো উত্তরে থাকে না, অথচ কাজটা অর্ধেক তাঁরই; (৫) অর্থনৈতিক বাস্তবতা — বর্গা, সারের দাম, বেচার সময় দামের পতন; (৬) ঝুঁকি ও উপসংহার। পঞ্চম অংশে **কারণ** বলুন: কৃষক অপেক্ষা করতে পারেন না, ব্যবসায়ী পারেন — এখানেই দাম হারায়।
