YouTube gives you two buttons no classroom ever offered: rewind five seconds, and captions on or off. Used properly they turn any video into a listening test that marks itself — you guess what was said, you check, you find out exactly which words your ear invented. Used improperly, which is how almost everyone uses them, captions do all the work, your eyes read a film, and after a hundred hours your listening is where it started.

The method is a loop on a very short piece: play about thirty seconds with captions off, write or say what you think you heard, turn captions on and compare, then play it once more with captions off. The thirty seconds is the point. Ten focused minutes of that loop is worth more than two hours of watching with the subtitles running.

যন্ত্রপাতিগুলো আগে জেনে নিন, কারণ এগুলো জানলে অনুশীলন অনেক দ্রুত হয়। কম্পিউটারে বাঁ-দিকের তির চাপলে পাঁচ সেকেন্ড পিছোয়, ফোনে পর্দার বাঁ দিকে দুবার টোকা দিলে দশ সেকেন্ড। 'c' চাপলে caption চালু-বন্ধ হয়। গতি বদলানোর জন্য সেটিংস, বা কম্পিউটারে shift সহ কমা ও ফুলস্টপ। এই কয়েকটা শর্টকাট মুখস্থ থাকলে একই লাইন দশবার শোনা মাত্র কয়েক সেকেন্ডের ব্যাপার — আর ওই দশবার শোনাটাই আসল কাজ। Caption নিয়ে দুটো নিয়ম, আর দুটোই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এক, বাংলা subtitle একেবারেই নয়। ওতে গল্প বোঝা যায়, কান কিছুই শেখে না, কারণ চোখ পুরো কাজটা করে ফেলে। দুই, ইংরেজি caption শুধু মিলিয়ে দেখার জন্য — আগে নয়, পরে। আর মনে রাখবেন, স্বয়ংক্রিয় caption সবসময় নির্ভুল নয়; বিশেষ করে নাম, সংখ্যা আর অচেনা টানের ক্ষেত্রে ভুল করে। তাই caption-এর সঙ্গে আপনার শোনা না মিললে সবসময় নিজেকে দোষ দেবেন না। গতি নিয়ে একটা পরামর্শ, যেটা অনেকের অভ্যাসের উল্টো। ০.৭৫ গতিতে নামানো প্রথম দুই সপ্তাহে ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু ওখানে থেকে যাবেন না — ধীর গতিতে ইংরেজির স্বাভাবিক জোড়াগুলো খুলে যায়, ফলে আপনি এমন একটা ভাষা অভ্যাস করেন যা কেউ বলে না। বরং স্বাভাবিক গতিতেই একই ছোট অংশ পাঁচবার শুনুন। আর যখন সহজ লাগতে শুরু করবে, ১.২৫ গতিতে শুনুন — এতে ফিরে স্বাভাবিক গতিটা আরামদায়ক লাগে। চ্যানেল বাছাইয়ে যা করবেন: একটা চ্যানেল বেছে নিয়ে তার কুড়িটা ভিডিও দেখুন, কুড়িটা চ্যানেলের একটা করে নয়। একই বক্তার কণ্ঠ, গতি ও প্রিয় শব্দ কান চিনে ফেললে বোঝার হার হঠাৎ বেড়ে যায়। আর বিষয় বাছুন এমন, যা নিয়ে আপনি বাংলাতেও আগ্রহী — রান্না, ক্রিকেট, মোবাইল রিভিউ, ইতিহাস, ব্যবসা। জানা বিষয় মানে মাথা আগে থেকেই অর্ধেক অনুমান করে রেখেছে, আর কান তখন ধ্বনির দিকে মন দিতে পারে। দুটো ব্যবহারিক ফাঁদ থেকে সাবধান। এক, অ্যালগরিদম আপনাকে বাংলা বিষয়বস্তুতে টেনে নেবেই — তাই একটা আলাদা প্লেলিস্ট বানিয়ে শুধু সেটাতেই ঢুকুন, হোমপেজে ঘোরাঘুরি করবেন না। দুই, ডেটা — ওয়াই-ফাইতে থাকতে ভিডিওগুলো অফলাইনে নামিয়ে রাখুন, তাহলে রাস্তায় বা লোডশেডিংয়ে অনুশীলন থামবে না। রোজ একটা ছোট ভিডিও নিয়ে দশ মিনিটের নিবিড় কাজ — এইটুকু তিন মাস চললে যা বদলাবে, এলোমেলোভাবে ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা দেখে তা হবে না।

Trusting auto-generated captions as always correct.
Using them as a guide but relying on the main idea.
Auto captions often mishear words, so treating them as perfect can teach you mistakes.
Watching ten videos passively in the background.
Watching one short video with full attention.
Background watching is hearing, not listening; focused practice is what trains your ear.
