A teacher should be honest about this one: songs are the most popular listening method in Bangladesh and one of the weakest, because a melody overrules the language. The tune decides which syllable is long and which is loud, so the stress pattern that identifies an English word is exactly the thing a song throws away — which is why you can sing a chorus perfectly for years and still not recognise those same words in a sentence. Songs are still worth using. They are just worth using for the two or three things they are actually good at.

Using songs well means treating the lyrics as a text and the recording as a puzzle: you write down what you hear, check it against the words, and study the gap. What songs teach reliably is individual sounds, vocabulary in context, and the willingness to keep going. What they do not teach is the rhythm of ordinary speech.

গানকে ঠিকভাবে কাজে লাগানো মানে lyrics-কে একটা লেখা হিসেবে আর রেকর্ডিংটাকে একটা ধাঁধা হিসেবে ধরা: কানে যা আসে লিখে ফেলুন, তারপর শব্দগুলোর সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে দেখুন, আর ফাঁকটা নিয়ে ভাবুন। গান নির্ভরযোগ্যভাবে শেখায় আলাদা ধ্বনি, প্রসঙ্গসহ শব্দ, আর লেগে থাকার আগ্রহ। যা শেখায় না, তা হলো সাধারণ কথাবার্তার ছন্দ।

সবচেয়ে ভালো কাজটা হলো ফাঁকা-জায়গা ভরাট, আর এটা শুধু শোনার চেয়ে বহুগুণ কার্যকর। গানের lyrics বের করে প্রতি লাইনে একটা-দুটো শব্দ মুছে দিন, কাগজে লিখে নিন, তারপর গান চালিয়ে ফাঁকাগুলো ভরুন। এখানে ব্যর্থ হওয়াটাই আসল শেখা — যে শব্দটা ধরতে পারলেন না, সেটাই আপনার কানের ফাঁক, আর ওটা এখন আপনি চোখে দেখতে পাচ্ছেন। শুধু শুনে গেলে ওই ফাঁকটা কখনো ধরাই পড়ত না। গান বাছাইয়ে দুটো নিয়ম মানুন। এক, গায়ক যেন গল্প বলার মতো করে গান — লোকগান, দেশি (country), সহজ পপ, ধীর ব্যালাড। যেসব গানে সুর টেনে লম্বা করা হয় বা গলা ভেঙে গাওয়া হয়, সেগুলোতে শব্দ চেনার উপায় নেই। দুই, নতুন গান নয় — একটাই গান এক সপ্তাহ। কান একই জিনিস বারবার শুনেই তৈরি হয়, আর গানের সুবিধা তো এটাই যে একই জিনিস বারবার শুনতে বিরক্ত লাগে না। এবার সেই জায়গাগুলো, যেখানে গান সত্যিই ভালো কাজ করে। প্রথমত, আলাদা ধ্বনি: গানে শব্দ ধীরে ও স্পষ্ট আসে, তাই /v/, /z/, th আর শেষের ব্যঞ্জনগুলো কানে ভালো ধরা পড়ে। দ্বিতীয়ত, শব্দ ও বাগধারা প্রসঙ্গসহ মনে থাকে — সুরের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে যায় বলে ভোলা কঠিন। তৃতীয়ত, প্রতিদিন কিছু একটা ইংরেজি শোনার অভ্যাস তৈরি হয়, আর অভ্যাসটাই সবচেয়ে দামি। কিন্তু চতুর্থ কোনো জিনিসের জন্য গানের ওপর ভরসা করবেন না। একটা সতর্কতা বাক্য গঠন নিয়ে, কারণ এটা লেখার পরীক্ষায় ক্ষতি করে। গানের ভাষা ইচ্ছে করেই ব্যাকরণ ভাঙে — 'I ain't got no money', 'She don't love me', 'There ain't nothing left' — মিল ও ছন্দ রক্ষা করার জন্য। এগুলো কথ্য ইংরেজিতে চলে, কিন্তু আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় বা পরীক্ষার খাতায় ভুল হিসেবে গণ্য হয়। গান থেকে শব্দ তুলুন, বাক্যের গঠন তুলবেন না। আর সবশেষে ভারসাম্যের কথা। গান আপনার listening-চর্চার এক-চতুর্থাংশ হতে পারে, পুরোটা নয়। বাকি তিন ভাগে থাকুক মানুষের সাধারণ কথা — সাক্ষাৎকার, পডকাস্ট, বক্তৃতা — যেখানে ইংরেজি তার নিজের ছন্দে চলে। ক্লায়েন্টের কল, ভাইভা বোর্ড বা বিমানবন্দরের ঘোষণা কেউ সুর করে বলবে না; আপনাকে যে ভাষাটা বুঝতে হবে, চর্চাটাও সেই ভাষাতেই হওয়া দরকার।
