Introductionভূমিকা
The opinion essay — often called 'agree or disagree' — is the most common IELTS Writing Task 2 question. You must state a clear position and defend it for the whole essay in at least 250 words. A predictable four-paragraph structure lets you focus on ideas and language instead of panicking about layout.

An opinion essay asks you to what extent you agree or disagree with a statement. You choose one clear side, state it in the introduction, support it with two body paragraphs (each one reason plus an example), and restate it in the conclusion.
Opinion essay-তে একটি বক্তব্যের সাথে আপনি কতটা একমত বা দ্বিমত তা জানতে চাওয়া হয়। আপনি একটি স্পষ্ট পক্ষ নেবেন, ভূমিকায় তা জানাবেন, দুটি body paragraph-এ (প্রতিটিতে একটি কারণ ও একটি উদাহরণ) সমর্থন করবেন এবং উপসংহারে আবার বলবেন।

কাঠামো (৪ অনুচ্ছেদ, ~২৫০–৪ শব্দ): (১) Introduction — প্রশ্নটি নিজের ভাষায় লিখুন (paraphrase) এবং স্পষ্টভাবে আপনার মত জানান (thesis)। (২) Body 1 — প্রথম কারণ + ব্যাখ্যা + উদাহরণ। (৩) Body 2 — দ্বিতীয় কারণ + ব্যাখ্যা + উদাহরণ। (৪) Conclusion — মত পুনরায় বলুন, নতুন কিছু যোগ করবেন না। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: একটিই পক্ষ নিন এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত ধরে রাখুন — 'both sides' লিখলে opinion essay-তে নম্বর কমে। প্রশ্নে 'to what extent do you agree?' থাকলে 'I completely agree' বা 'I largely disagree'-এর মতো স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিন। সময়: ~৪০ মিনিট, শেষ ৩–৪ মিনিট বানান ও grammar পরীক্ষার জন্য রাখুন।

- Thesis (introduction): 'I strongly agree that higher education should be free, mainly because it widens access and benefits the whole economy.'Thesis (ভূমিকা): 'আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে একমত যে উচ্চশিক্ষা বিনামূল্যে হওয়া উচিত, প্রধানত কারণ এটি সুযোগ বাড়ায় এবং পুরো অর্থনীতির উপকার করে।'
- Topic sentence (Body 1): 'The main reason I hold this view is that free education removes financial barriers for talented students.'Topic sentence (Body 1): 'আমি এই মত পোষণ করার মূল কারণ হলো, বিনামূল্যে শিক্ষা মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীদের আর্থিক বাধা দূর করে।'
- Example inside a body paragraph: 'For instance, in countries like Germany, tuition-free universities have widened participation among low-income families.'Body paragraph-এ উদাহরণ: 'উদাহরণস্বরূপ, জার্মানির মতো দেশে টিউশন-ফ্রি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় নিম্ন-আয়ের পরিবারের অংশগ্রহণ বাড়িয়েছে।'
- Concession + defence: 'Although free education is costly for governments, this expense is outweighed by the long-term economic returns.'স্বীকার + যুক্তি: 'যদিও বিনামূল্যে শিক্ষা সরকারের জন্য ব্যয়বহুল, দীর্ঘমেয়াদি অর্থনৈতিক লাভ এই খরচকে ছাড়িয়ে যায়।'
- Conclusion: 'In conclusion, I firmly believe the benefits of free higher education far outweigh its costs.'উপসংহার: 'পরিশেষে, আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করি বিনামূল্যে উচ্চশিক্ষার সুবিধা এর খরচকে অনেকখানি ছাড়িয়ে যায়।'
- Useful phrase for a firm opinion: 'From my perspective, there is no doubt that…'দৃঢ় মত প্রকাশের phrase: 'আমার দৃষ্টিতে, এতে কোনো সন্দেহ নেই যে…'
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Discussing both sides equally, then not choosing one.
Pick one clear position and defend it throughout the whole essay.
An opinion essay needs a consistent stance; sitting on the fence lowers your Task Response score.
Copying the exact words of the question in your introduction.
Paraphrase the statement using synonyms and different grammar.
Copied words are not counted toward your 250 and show a limited lexical resource.
Writing one long paragraph with no breaks.
Use four clear paragraphs: intro, two bodies, conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion is a scored criterion; clear paragraphing is essential.
Adding a brand-new argument in the conclusion.
Only summarise your position and main reasons in the conclusion.
A new idea with no support weakens the essay and confuses the examiner.

- Spend 5 minutes planning your position and two reasons before you write a single sentence. — লেখা শুরুর আগে ৫ মিনিট আপনার অবস্থান ও দুটি কারণ পরিকল্পনা করুন।
- Give each body paragraph one main idea, then explain it and add one specific example. — প্রতিটি body paragraph-এ একটি মূল আইডিয়া দিন, ব্যাখ্যা করুন ও একটি নির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ যোগ করুন।
- Aim for 260–290 words: enough to develop ideas, without wasting time on padding. — ২৬০–২৯০ শব্দ লক্ষ্য রাখুন: আইডিয়া গড়ার মতো যথেষ্ট, তবে অপ্রয়োজনীয় বাড়তি শব্দ নয়।
- Leave 3–4 minutes at the end to check spelling, articles and subject–verb agreement. — শেষে ৩–৪ মিনিট রাখুন বানান, article ও subject–verb agreement যাচাই করতে।

How long should I spend on Writing Task 2?
About 40 of your 60 minutes, since Task 2 is worth twice as many marks as Task 1. Plan for 5 minutes, write for about 32, and check for the last 3–4.
Can I use 'I' in an IELTS opinion essay?
Yes. Opinion essays expect a personal stance, so phrases like 'I strongly believe' or 'In my view' are appropriate and expected.
Do I lose marks for choosing the 'wrong' opinion?
No. There is no correct opinion. You are marked on how clearly and logically you argue your position, not on which side you take.
Should I always fully agree or fully disagree?
Not necessarily. A partial position ('I mostly agree, but with one reservation') is fine as long as it is clear and consistent throughout the essay.
