Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla builds extra meaning by adding a second verb: রেখে দেওয়া, নিভিয়ে ফেলা, সরিয়ে রাখা, সহ্য করে যাওয়া. English does the same job with a small word after the verb: put away, put out, put off, put up with. Once you see that these are two solutions to the same problem, phrasal verbs stop looking like a random list and start looking like what they are — English's way of making one verb do the work of twenty.

“Put” plus a particle covers wearing (put on), postponing (put off), extinguishing (put out), tidying (put away), setting down (put down), assembling (put together) and tolerating (put up with). The particle carries the meaning; the verb barely changes.

“Put”-এর সাথে particle বসিয়ে বোঝানো যায় পরা (put on), পিছিয়ে দেওয়া (put off), নেভানো (put out), গুছিয়ে রাখা (put away), নামিয়ে রাখা (put down), জোড়া লাগানো (put together) আর সহ্য করা (put up with)। অর্থটা বয়ে নিয়ে যায় particle-টাই; verb প্রায় বদলায় না।

অর্থগুলো: “put on” = জামা-জুতা পরা, আবার ওজন বাড়া; “put off” = পিছিয়ে দেওয়া, স্থগিত করা; “put out” = আগুন বা মোমবাতি নেভানো, আবার বাইরে রেখে আসা; “put away” = জায়গামতো গুছিয়ে রাখা; “put down” = নামিয়ে রাখা, বা লিখে রাখা; “put together” = জোড়া লাগানো, তৈরি করা; “put up with” = অনিচ্ছা সত্ত্বেও সহ্য করা; “put aside” = আলাদা করে রাখা, সঞ্চয় করা; “put forward” = প্রস্তাব দেওয়া; “put through” = ফোনে লাইন ধরিয়ে দেওয়া; “put up” = আশ্রয় দেওয়া, বা টাঙিয়ে দেওয়া। এখন সেই ভুলটা, যেটা এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি হয়: বাতি “put off” করা যায় না। ইংরেজিতে আলো, পাখা, টিভি — এগুলো turn off বা switch off হয়। Put out ব্যবহার হয় আগুন, মোমবাতি আর সিগারেটের জন্য, অর্থাৎ যেখানে সত্যিকারের শিখা নিভছে। আর put off মানে সময় পিছিয়ে দেওয়া — “They put off the meeting until Friday”। তিনটে আলাদা কাজ, তিনটে আলাদা বাক্যাংশ। দ্বিতীয় ফাঁদ “put up with”, যেটা তিন শব্দের একটা গোটা ক্রিয়া — with বাদ দেওয়া যায় না, আর তিনটে শব্দ কখনো আলাদা হয় না: “I can't put up with this noise” ✓, “put up this noise” ✗, “put it up with” ✗। তিন শব্দের phrasal verb সবসময় inseparable, আর object বসে সবার পরে। আর ভাগ করার নিয়মটা মনে রাখুন, কারণ পরীক্ষায় আর কথায় দুই জায়গাতেই এটা লাগে। Put on, put off, put away, put down, put together — এগুলো separable: “put off the meeting” বা “put the meeting off”, দুটোই ঠিক। কিন্তু object সর্বনাম হলে মাঝখানে বসবেই: “put it off” ✓, “put off it” ✗। আর put on-এর সাথে wear গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না — put on কাজটা (এক মুহূর্তের), wear অবস্থাটা (কিছুক্ষণ ধরে): “I put on my shirt at seven and I'm wearing it now.” শেষে ওজনের কথাটা: “put on weight” ঠিক, আর মাত্রা বোঝাতে বলুন “a lot of weight” — “much weight” সাধারণ বাক্যে বেখাপ্পা শোনায়, কারণ much বেশির ভাগ সময় প্রশ্নে আর না-বোধক বাক্যে বসে। অফিসে সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগবে দুটো: “Can we put the meeting off until Monday?” আর “I've put together a short summary for you.”

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

Please put off the light before you sleep.
Please turn off the light before you sleep.
Switching off a light or fan is 'turn off', not 'put off'. 'Put off' means to postpone something to a later time.
I can't put up this rude behaviour.
I can't put up with this rude behaviour.
The phrasal verb is 'put up with' (three words). Dropping 'with' changes the meaning completely.
She put on much weight.
She put on a lot of weight.
'Put on weight' is correct, but 'much' sounds unnatural in a positive statement — use 'a lot of' instead.
Put on your jacket off, it's hot.
Take off your jacket, it's hot.
'Put on' means to dress; the opposite (to remove) is 'take off'. You cannot mix both particles in one action.
