Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla marks “continuing” by hanging থাকা onto a verb — পড়তে থাকা, বলতেই থাকা — and English does the same job with keep: keep studying, keep on talking. The two systems line up almost perfectly, except for one thing. Bangla's পড়তে looks like an infinitive, so it comes across as “to study”, and “She kept on to study all night” appears. After keep and keep on, English always wants the -ing form.

“Keep” phrasal verbs are about continuing and maintaining: keep on (continue), keep up (maintain a standard or a pace), keep up with (match someone or something), keep away from (stay clear of), keep to (stick to), keep back (hold in reserve or hold someone behind).

“Keep”-এর phrasal verb চলতে থাকা আর ধরে রাখা নিয়ে: keep on (চালিয়ে যাওয়া), keep up (মান বা গতি ধরে রাখা), keep up with (কারও বা কিছুর সাথে তাল মেলানো), keep away from (দূরে থাকা), keep to (আঁকড়ে থাকা), keep back (আটকে রাখা বা কাউকে থেকে যেতে বলা)।

অর্থগুলো: “keep on doing something” = করতেই থাকা; “keep up” = মান বা চেষ্টা ধরে রাখা (“Keep up the good work”); “keep up with” = তাল মিলিয়ে চলা, পিছিয়ে না পড়া; “keep away from” = দূরে থাকা, এড়িয়ে চলা; “keep to something” = নির্দিষ্ট পথ, নিয়ম বা বিষয়ে অটল থাকা; “keep back” = আটকে রাখা, বা তথ্য গোপন রাখা; “keep out” = ভেতরে ঢুকতে না দেওয়া; “keep off” = দূরে রাখা, এড়িয়ে চলা (“Keep off the grass”); “keep in touch” = যোগাযোগ রাখা; “keep an eye on” = নজর রাখা। ফাঁদ তিনটে। এক, -ing রূপ: keep আর keep on-এর পরে সবসময় -ing — keep studying, keep on trying; “keep to study” নয়। দুই, with বাদ পড়া: “keep up with” মানে তাল মেলানো, আর with বাদ দিলে অর্থ বদলে যায় — “I can't keep up with the news” মানে খবরের সাথে তাল মেলাতে পারছি না, আর “Keep up the good work” মানে কাজটা এভাবেই চালিয়ে যাও। তিন, শব্দক্রম: “Keep your voice down” — এখানে object-টা মাঝখানেই বসে, “keep down your voice” বলা হয় না; একই ছাঁচে “keep your head down”, “keep your options open”। আর “keep away FROM” — of নয়। আর ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে এই দলটা অস্বাভাবিক রকম কাজের, বিশেষ করে উৎসাহ দেওয়ার ইংরেজিতে। কাউকে উৎসাহ দিতে সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক বাক্য “Keep it up!” বা “Keep up the good work” — শিক্ষকের মুখে, বসের ইমেইলে, বন্ধুর মেসেজে সবখানে চলে। যোগাযোগ ধরে রাখতে “Let's keep in touch” — বিদায়ের সময় ইংরেজিতে এটাই বাঁধা বাক্য। আর নিজের অবস্থা বোঝাতে “keep up with” খুব দরকারি, কারণ এটা দোষ না দিয়ে চাপের কথা বলে: “There's so much reading that I'm struggling to keep up with the course.” সতর্কতার নোটিশেও এই দলটাই চলে — “Keep out”, “Keep off the grass”, “Keep away from the edge” — অর্থাৎ ইংরেজি সাইনবোর্ড পড়তে গেলেও এগুলো লাগবে। শেষে ভঙ্গির কথা: এগুলো কথ্য কিন্তু ভদ্র, তাই অফিসের ইমেইলেও নির্দ্বিধায় ব্যবহার করা যায়।
