Introductionভূমিকা

The most-heard English sentence in any office in Dhaka is probably “Please hold on, I'll transfer your call.” Hold is a telephone verb before it is anything else, and the particle carries the whole meaning: hold on means wait, hold up means delay, hold back means keep something inside. Bangla and English agree on one of them exactly — কান্না চেপে রাখা is “hold back your tears” — which is a useful place to start.

“Hold” phrasal verbs cover waiting (hold on), delaying (hold up), restraining (hold back), postponing (hold off) and keeping something to yourself (hold out on). Two of them — hold up and hold back — take an object; the rest usually do not.

“Hold”-এর phrasal verb ঢাকে অপেক্ষা (hold on), দেরি করানো (hold up), চেপে রাখা (hold back), পিছিয়ে দেওয়া (hold off) আর কিছু গোপন রাখা (hold out on)। এদের দুটো — hold up আর hold back — object নেয়; বাকিরা সাধারণত নেয় না।

অর্থগুলো: “hold on” = একটু অপেক্ষা করা (ফোনে বা সামনাসামনি); “hold up” = দেরি করিয়ে দেওয়া, আটকে রাখা; আবার অস্ত্র দেখিয়ে ডাকাতি করা; “hold back” = কান্না, রাগ বা তথ্য চেপে রাখা; আবার কাউকে এগোতে না দেওয়া; “hold off” = সিদ্ধান্ত বা কাজ পিছিয়ে রাখা; “hold out” = টিকে থাকা, ফুরিয়ে না যাওয়া; “hold out on somebody” = কারও কাছ থেকে কিছু গোপন রাখা; “hold down a job” = চাকরিটা ধরে রাখা; “hold together” = একসাথে ধরে রাখা, ভেঙে না পড়া। ফাঁদগুলো particle-এ, আর এগুলো কাছাকাছি বলেই বেশি গুলিয়ে যায়। “Hold ON a second” — in নয়। “The rain held UP our plans” — held on নয়; দেরি করানোর অর্থে up। “She held BACK her tears” — held down নয়; hold down মানে চেপে ধরে রাখা বা চাকরি ধরে রাখা, কান্নার সাথে নয়। ফোনে অপেক্ষা করতে বলার তিনটে শুদ্ধ রূপ আছে: “Please hold on”, “Please hold”, বা “Could you hold the line?” — কিন্তু “Please hold to the line” নয়। আর object-এর জায়গা: hold up আর hold back separable, তাই সর্বনাম মাঝখানে — “The accident held us up for two hours” ✓, “held up us” ✗। আর দুটো ব্যবহার আলাদা করে জেনে রাখুন, কারণ কাজের জায়গায় এদুটোই সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগবে। এক, দেরির কারণ ব্যাখ্যা করতে “hold up” সবচেয়ে স্বাভাবিক, আর এটা passive-এ বসালে দোষারোপ ছাড়াই কথাটা বলা যায়: “I'm sorry I'm late — I was held up in traffic on the flyover.” ইংরেজিতে দেরির অজুহাত দেওয়ার এটাই ভদ্রতম গড়ন। দুই, সিদ্ধান্ত পিছিয়ে দিতে “hold off”: “Let's hold off on the order until we hear from the client.” এটা “না” বলা নয়, আবার এগোনোও নয় — ব্যবসায়িক ইমেইলে এই মাঝামাঝি অবস্থানটা প্রায়ই দরকার হয়। আর মনে রাখবেন “hold up”-এর দ্বিতীয় অর্থটা ডাকাতি, তাই খবরের ইংরেজিতে “Two men held up the bank” পড়লে বিভ্রান্ত হবেন না — বাক্যের বাকিটাই বলে দেবে কোন অর্থ চলছে।
