Introductionভূমিকা

“My alarm went off at six.” To a Bangla speaker that should mean the alarm stopped — অফ মানেই তো বন্ধ. In English it means the opposite: the alarm started ringing. The word off arrived in Bangla as a borrowed verb meaning “switch it off”, and it now fights every English sentence where off means something else. Go is full of these, and the particle, not the verb, is where the meaning lives.

“My alarm went off at six.”

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Most “go” phrasal verbs take no object at all, which makes them simpler than they look: go on, go out, go up, go down, go off, go ahead. What is not simple is that several of them carry two unrelated meanings, and only the sentence around them tells you which one is in use.

“Go”-এর বেশির ভাগ phrasal verb কোনো object নেয়ই না, তাই এগুলো দেখতে যতটা কঠিন ততটা নয়: go on, go out, go up, go down, go off, go ahead। কঠিন যেটা, তা হলো এদের কয়েকটার দুটো সম্পূর্ণ সম্পর্কহীন অর্থ আছে, আর কোনটা চলছে সেটা বলে দেয় কেবল আশপাশের বাক্যটাই।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

অর্থগুলো: “go on” = চলতে থাকা, ঘটতে থাকা (“What's going on?”); “go out” = বাইরে যাওয়া, আবার আলো বা আগুন নিভে যাওয়া; “go through” = কঠিন সময় পার করা, আবার খুঁটিয়ে দেখা; “go up” = দাম বা সংখ্যা বাড়া; “go down” = কমা, আবার সূর্য ডোবা; “go over” = আবার দেখে নেওয়া, ঝালিয়ে নেওয়া; “go off” = অ্যালার্ম বা বোমা বেজে ওঠা বা ফেটে যাওয়া, আবার খাবার নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়া; “go ahead” = এগিয়ে যাওয়া, শুরু করে দেওয়া; “go back” = ফিরে যাওয়া; “go after” = পিছু নেওয়া বা কোনো লক্ষ্যের পিছনে ছোটা; “go without” = কিছু ছাড়াই চালিয়ে নেওয়া। দুই অর্থওয়ালা জোড়াগুলো আলাদা করে চিনে রাখুন, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বেশি বিভ্রান্তি। “Go off” — অ্যালার্ম বা বোমার জন্য মানে চালু হওয়া বা ফেটে যাওয়া (“The alarm went off”, “A bomb went off”), আর দুধ বা খাবারের জন্য মানে নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়া (“The milk has gone off”)। “Go out” — মানুষের জন্য মানে বাইরে যাওয়া (“Let's go out for dinner”), আর আলো বা আগুনের জন্য মানে নিভে যাওয়া (“The lights went out during the storm”)। “Go through” — কষ্টের জন্য মানে ভোগ করা (“She went through a hard time”), আর কাগজের জন্য মানে খুঁটিয়ে দেখা (“Let's go through the figures again”)। বাক্যের বাকি অংশটাই ঠিক করে দেয় কোন অর্থ; শব্দটা নিজে কিছু বলে না। আর ব্যাকরণের দুটো কথা। এক, go-এর বেশির ভাগ phrasal verb inseparable আর object-হীন, তাই ভেতরে কিছু ঢোকানোর প্রশ্নই ওঠে না; যেগুলো object নেয় সেগুলোতেও object পুরো বাক্যাংশের পরে বসে — “She went through a hard time” ✓, “went through FROM a hard time” ✗ (বাড়তি preposition নেই)। দুই, “go out”-এর আগে to বসে না — “Let's go out tonight” ✓, “Let's go to out” ✗; তবে গন্তব্য বললে to ফিরে আসে: “Let's go out to a restaurant”। আর বাড়তি শব্দ এড়িয়ে চলুন: “Prices are going up day by day” যথেষ্ট, “going up high” বলার দরকার নেই, কারণ ওঠার অর্থটা up-এর ভেতরেই আছে। দাম নিয়ে কথা বলার সময় ইংরেজি এই জোড়াগুলোই ব্যবহার করে — go up, go down, rise, fall — আর বাংলাদেশে বাজারদর নিয়ে কথা হয় প্রতিদিন, তাই এই ছোট দলটা রপ্ত হলে দৈনন্দিন ইংরেজির একটা বড় অংশ খুলে যায়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • My alarm went out at 6 this morning.

My alarm went off at 6 this morning.

An alarm ringing is 'go off'. 'Go out' is used for lights or fires that stop burning.

  • She went through from a hard time.

She went through a hard time.

'Go through' is followed directly by the object — no 'from'. Adding it is a translation habit from Bangla.

  • Let's go to out tonight.

    Let's go out tonight.

'Go out' already contains the movement — there is no 'to' between 'go' and 'out'.

  • The prices are going up high day by day.

The prices are going up day by day.

'Go up' already means to rise, so adding 'high' is redundant — a common word-for-word translation.

Tipsটিপস

  • 'Go off' has two very different meanings: an alarm ringing ('the alarm went off') and food spoiling ('the milk has gone off'). Context makes it clear. 'Go off'-এর দুটি ভিন্ন অর্থ: অ্যালার্ম বেজে ওঠা ('the alarm went off') এবং খাবার নষ্ট হওয়া ('the milk has gone off')। প্রসঙ্গ দেখে বুঝে নিন।
  • Most 'go' phrasal verbs are intransitive and inseparable — they take no object in the middle, so you never split them. 'Go' দিয়ে গঠিত বেশিরভাগ phrasal verb intransitive ও inseparable — মাঝখানে object বসে না, তাই এগুলো ভাগ করা যায় না।
  • Learn opposite pairs together to remember them faster: 'go up' / 'go down' for prices, and 'go out' / 'come in' for movement. দ্রুত মনে রাখতে বিপরীত জোড়া একসাথে শিখুন: দামের জন্য 'go up' / 'go down', আর চলাচলের জন্য 'go out' / 'come in'।
