Introductionভূমিকা

“Get down the bus at the next stop.” Almost every Bangladeshi has said it, and the reason is one Bangla word: নামা, which covers coming down from anywhere. English chose a different picture — you were ON the bus, so you get OFF it — and reserves “get down” for climbing down from a height. Travel is where these small particles matter most, because you use them under pressure, at a counter, with a queue behind you.

“Get down the bus at the next stop.”

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Travel phrasal verbs come in opposite pairs, which is the easiest way to learn them: check in / check out, get on / get off, get in / get out of, take off / land, set off / arrive, pick up / drop off. Learn each pair together and you have both halves of every journey.

ভ্রমণের phrasal verb আসে বিপরীত জোড়ায়, আর শেখার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায়ও সেটাই: check in / check out, get on / get off, get in / get out of, take off / land, set off / arrive, pick up / drop off। প্রতিটা জোড়া একসাথে শিখলে যাত্রার দুই প্রান্তই হাতে চলে আসে।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

অর্থগুলো: “check in” = বিমানবন্দরে বা হোটেলে নাম নথিভুক্ত করা; “check out” = হোটেল ছেড়ে হিসাব চুকিয়ে বেরোনো; “set off” বা “set out” = যাত্রা শুরু করা; “get on” = বাস, ট্রেন, প্লেন, লঞ্চে ওঠা; “get off” = ওগুলো থেকে নামা; “get in” আর “get out of” = গাড়ি, ট্যাক্সি, সিএনজিতে ওঠা-নামা; “take off” = উড়াল দেওয়া; “land” = অবতরণ করা; “pick someone up” = কাউকে গাড়িতে তুলে নেওয়া; “drop someone off” = কাউকে নামিয়ে দেওয়া; “look around” = ঘুরে দেখা; “stop over” = মাঝপথে বিরতি নেওয়া; “see someone off” = বিদায় জানাতে যাওয়া। এখন দুটো নিয়ম, যেগুলো জানলে এই দলের প্রায় সব ভুল বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। এক, বাহনের আকার অনুযায়ী particle: যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে হাঁটাচলা করা যায় সেখানে on / off (bus, train, plane, launch), আর যেখানে গুটিসুটি হয়ে ঢুকতে হয় সেখানে in / out of (car, taxi, CNG)। দুই, সর্বনামের জায়গা: pick up, drop off আর see off আলাদা করা যায় এমন phrasal verb, তাই object মাঝে বা পরে বসতে পারে — “pick up my cousin” বা “pick my cousin up” — কিন্তু object যদি সর্বনাম হয় তবে সে মাঝখানেই বসবে: “pick us up”, কখনো “pick up us” নয়। এটা ইংরেজির একটা সাধারণ নিয়ম: চেনা, পুরোনো তথ্য বাক্যে আগে বসে। আর কাউন্টারে দাঁড়িয়ে কাজে লাগবে এমন বাক্যগুলো গোটা অবস্থায় মুখস্থ রাখুন, কারণ ওখানে বাক্য বানানোর সময় থাকে না: “I'd like to check in for the 9 o'clock flight to Dubai.” “What time do we have to check out?” “Does this bus stop at Feni?” “Could you tell me when to get off?” “My cousin will pick me up from the airport.” “Is there a stopover in Doha?” আর বিদেশে গিয়ে সবচেয়ে বেশি যেটা লাগে সেটা হলো ভুল স্বীকার করে সাহায্য চাওয়ার বাক্য: “Sorry, I got off at the wrong stop — how do I get back to the station?” ইংরেজিতে সাহায্য চাওয়া দুর্বলতা নয়, আর একটা ভদ্র বাক্য জানা থাকলে আটকে যাওয়া ভ্রমণও চলতে শুরু করে।
