Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla puts anger in the head — মাথা গরম হয়ে গেছে — and English puts it almost everywhere else: the temper is lost, the top is blown, the roof is hit, the blood boils. Only one English phrase keeps the head, and it is the one Bangladeshi learners most often break: “He lost his temperature.” Temper is the word; temperature is what a thermometer measures. Anger idioms are worth being careful with, because they are the phrases you reach for exactly when you are least careful.

বাংলা রাগটাকে রাখে মাথায় — মাথা গরম হয়ে গেছে — আর ইংরেজি রাখে প্রায় সব জায়গায়: temper হারায়, top ফেটে যায়, roof-এ ঘা লাগে, রক্ত ফুটতে থাকে। ইংরেজির একটামাত্র বাক্যাংশে মাথাটা থাকে, আর সেটাই বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা সবচেয়ে বেশি ভাঙেন: “He lost his temperature.” শব্দটা temper; temperature হলো থার্মোমিটারে যা মাপা হয়। রাগের idiom নিয়ে সাবধান থাকা দরকার, কারণ ঠিক যে মুহূর্তে আপনি সবচেয়ে কম সাবধান, সেই মুহূর্তেই এই বাক্যাংশগুলো মুখে আসে।

Anger idioms come in strengths, and choosing the wrong strength is the real mistake. “Get on your nerves” is a slow, mild irritation. “Lose your temper” is an ordinary loss of control. “See red”, “hit the roof” and “blow your top” are sudden and violent. They are not interchangeable.

অর্থগুলো মাত্রা অনুযায়ী সাজিয়ে নিন। হালকা, চলতে থাকা বিরক্তি: “get on your nerves” = গায়ে জ্বালা ধরিয়ে দেওয়া, বিরক্ত করা; “rub someone up the wrong way” = অজান্তেই কাউকে চটিয়ে দেওয়া; “be fed up with” = তিতিবিরক্ত হওয়া। মাঝারি: “lose your temper” = মেজাজ হারানো; “hot under the collar” = রেগে গরম হয়ে ওঠা; “snap at someone” = ঝাঁঝিয়ে ওঠা। প্রচণ্ড: “see red” = রাগে চোখে অন্ধকার দেখা; “hit the roof” আর “blow your top” = রেগে আগুন হয়ে যাওয়া; “make your blood boil” = রাগে গা জ্বলে যাওয়া; “fly off the handle” = হঠাৎ বিনা নোটিশে ফেটে পড়া; “go ballistic” = একেবারে খেপে যাওয়া (খুবই কথ্য)। ফাঁদগুলো তিন রকম। প্রথমত শব্দ: temper, temperature নয়। দ্বিতীয়ত preposition: “get ON my nerves” — in নয়; “fly OFF the handle” — of নয়; “hot UNDER the collar” — আর collar একবচনে, জামার একটাই কলার। তৃতীয়ত শব্দক্রম: “made my blood boil” — কর্তা আগে, তারপর boil; “made boil my blood” নয়, কারণ ইংরেজিতে make-এর পরে প্রথমে কে বা কী, তারপর কাজটা বসে। আর সর্বনাম কর্তা অনুযায়ী বদলাবে: he lost his temper, they lost their tempers, she blew her top। আর ব্যবহারের নিয়মটা এখানে অন্য যেকোনো দলের চেয়ে কড়া, কারণ রাগের কথা আমরা প্রায়ই লিখি — অভিযোগপত্রে, ইমেইলে, রিভিউতে — আর ওখানে idiom বসালে অভিযোগটা দুর্বল হয়ে যায়। কোম্পানিকে লেখা চিঠিতে “Your service made my blood boil” লিখবেন না; লিখুন “I was extremely dissatisfied with the service, for three reasons.” রাগ যত ঠান্ডা ভাষায় লেখা হয়, ইংরেজিতে সেটা তত জোরালো শোনায় — এটা বাংলার সাথে বড় একটা তফাত, কারণ বাংলায় আবেগের ভাষা অভিযোগে বল যোগ করে। কথাবার্তায় অবশ্য এই idiom গুলো চমৎকার, বিশেষ করে তৃতীয় ব্যক্তির সম্পর্কে বলার সময়: “Dad hit the roof when he saw the results.” আর নিজের রাগ নরম করে বলতে চাইলে ইংরেজি ব্যবহার করে ছোট শব্দ — “I got a bit annoyed”, “That does grate on me a little” — এই মাপা ভঙ্গিটাই ইংরেজিভাষী কানে পরিণত শোনায়।
