Completing Sentences: Rules and Structures
Completing Sentences (বাক্য সম্পূর্ণ করা)
Introductionভূমিকা
Completing sentences looks like a test of imagination and is really a test of memory. Each item begins with a fixed structure — so…that, no sooner…than, lest, it is high time — and each structure has exactly one grammatical way to finish it. Learn the structures and the marks are almost automatic.
Completing sentences দেখতে কল্পনার পরীক্ষা মনে হয়, আসলে এটা মুখস্থের পরীক্ষা। প্রতিটি প্রশ্ন একটা নির্দিষ্ট গঠন দিয়ে শুরু হয় — so…that, no sooner…than, lest, it is high time — আর প্রতিটি গঠন শেষ করার ব্যাকরণগত উপায় ঠিক একটাই। গঠনগুলো শিখে ফেললে নম্বর প্রায় নিশ্চিত।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Completing sentences means finishing an incomplete sentence so that it is grammatically correct and makes sense, keeping the structure the question began with.
Completing sentences মানে অসম্পূর্ণ বাক্যটি এমনভাবে শেষ করা যাতে তা ব্যাকরণসম্মত ও অর্থবোধক হয়, এবং প্রশ্নে দেওয়া গঠনটি বজায় থাকে।

প্রতিটি গঠনের নিয়ম মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন — পরীক্ষায় এগুলোই ঘুরেফিরে আসে: **so … that** → so + adjective + that + subject + verb: 'He is so weak **that he cannot walk**.' **too … to** → too + adjective + to + base verb: 'He is too weak **to walk**.' **such … that** → such + a/an + adjective + noun + that: 'It is such a nice book **that I read it twice**.' **no sooner … than** → no sooner had + subject + V3 + than + past simple: 'No sooner had he come **than it began to rain**.' **scarcely/hardly … when** → একই গঠন, শুধু than-এর বদলে **when**। **as soon as** → as soon as + past, তারপর past: 'As soon as he came, **the bell rang**.' **lest** → lest + subject + **should** + base verb (lest-এর পরে not বসে না): 'Walk fast lest **you should miss the train**.' **It is high time / It is time** → past form: 'It is high time we **changed our habit**.' **Would that / I wish** → past form: 'I wish I **were a bird**.' **Since / As / Because** → কারণ: 'Since he was ill, **he could not attend**.' **Though / Although** → বিপরীত ভাব: 'Though he is poor, **he is honest**.' — although-এর সাথে **but বসে না**। **Unless** → unless-এর পরে **not বসে না** (unless মানেই if not): 'Unless you work hard, **you will fail**.' **In spite of / Despite** → এর পরে **noun বা -ing**: 'In spite of **his poverty**, he is happy.' **as if / as though** → past form: 'He talks as if **he knew everything**.' **so that** → উদ্দেশ্য, সাথে can/could/may/might: 'He reads attentively so that **he can pass**.'

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Although he is poor, but he is honest.
Although he is poor, he is honest.
English uses one connector, not two. 'Although…but' is the commonest error in this whole item.
Unless you do not work hard, you will fail.
Unless you work hard, you will fail.
'Unless' already means 'if not', so a second negative reverses the meaning.
Walk fast lest you should not miss the train.
Walk fast lest you should miss the train.
'Lest' is itself negative. Adding 'not' says the opposite of what you mean.
No sooner he came than it rained.
No sooner had he come than it rained.
'No sooner' at the start inverts the order: had + subject + past participle.
It is high time we change our plan.
It is high time we changed our plan.
'It is high time' takes the past form even though the meaning is present.
Tipsটিপস
- Identify the structure first. The words so, too, such, lest, unless, though decide the whole answer. — আগে গঠনটা চিনুন। so, too, such, lest, unless, though — এই শব্দগুলোই পুরো উত্তর ঠিক করে দেয়।
- Never pair although with but, or unless with not, or lest with not. — although-এর সাথে but, unless-এর সাথে not, lest-এর সাথে not — কখনো নয়।
- Keep your completion short. A long clause creates more chances to make a mistake. — সম্পূর্ণ অংশটা ছোট রাখুন। লম্বা করলে ভুলের সুযোগ বাড়ে।
- Make sure the finished sentence makes real sense, not just correct grammar. — শেষ বাক্যটি যেন ব্যাকরণসম্মত হওয়ার পাশাপাশি অর্থবোধকও হয়।

How many marks does completing sentences carry?
Usually five marks in SSC and HSC English second paper. Because the structures repeat every year, it is among the easiest items to secure full marks on.
Can I write anything as long as the grammar is right?
The grammar carries most of the mark, but the sentence must also make sense. 'He is so poor that he is a bird' is grammatical and will still be marked down.
What is the difference between 'so…that' and 'too…to'?
Both express excess, but 'so…that' needs a full clause with a subject and verb, while 'too…to' is followed only by a base verb. 'So weak that he cannot walk' = 'too weak to walk'.
Which structures come up most often?
so…that, too…to, no sooner…than, unless, though/although, lest, it is high time, and in spite of. Master those eight and you cover most papers.
