A common mistake

Once a galvanised sheet is scratched, the iron underneath starts rusting from that point.→It does not, and the reason is elegant. Zinc corrodes in preference to iron, so even where the coating is broken the surrounding zinc gives itself up first and the exposed iron is protected — which is why a scratched galvanised roof keeps working for years.

রং করা লোহা আঁচড় লাগলেই সেখান থেকে মরচে ধরে, কারণ রং কেবল আড়াল দেয়। দস্তা কাজ করে অন্যভাবে: রাসায়নিকভাবে সে লোহার চেয়ে বেশি সক্রিয়, তাই দুটি ধাতু পাশাপাশি থাকলে ক্ষয় হয় দস্তারই। একে বলা হয় sacrificial protection — নিজে ক্ষয়ে গিয়ে অন্যকে বাঁচানো। এ কারণেই টিনের চালে আঁচড় পড়লেও তা দ্রুত ফুটো হয় না, আর জাহাজের গায়ে ইচ্ছে করে দস্তার টুকরো বসিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।
