A common mistake

Wrought iron and cast iron are two names for the same metal.→Cast iron is poured molten into a mould: hard, but brittle enough to crack if it is dropped. Wrought iron is worked hot under a hammer, and it bends rather than breaks — which is why gates and railings were made of it, though most sold as wrought iron today are mild steel.

নামেই পদ্ধতি লেখা আছে: cast মানে ছাঁচে ঢালা, wrought মানে পিটিয়ে গড়া। ঢালাই লোহায় কার্বন বেশি, তাই তা শক্ত কিন্তু ভঙ্গুর — চাপ পড়লে বেঁকে না গিয়ে ফেটে যায়। পেটা লোহায় কার্বন কম ও আঁশের মতো গঠন, তাই তা নমনীয় ও চিমটে-হাতুড়ির নিচে আকৃতি নেয়। আজকাল খাঁটি পেটা লোহা প্রায় তৈরিই হয় না; দোকানে যাকে wrought iron বলা হয় তা সাধারণত মাইল্ড স্টিল।
